Facebook mobile chat to be exclusive to Facebook Messenger app

Facebook Messenger

Facebook mobile users who want to continue chatting with friends through the application will soon be forced to download the Facebook Messenger application.

In 2 weeks time the chat feature will be stripped from the Facebook application for iOS and Android and be exclusively available on the Facebook Messenger app. The social networking giant has already begun notifying users with an alert at the bottom of the Facebook app.

Users are understandably mythed by the social networking giants decision to fragment the Facebook experience into two applications, but it should help the default Facebook app to download and load faster and Facebook Messenger offers features far beyond what is possible with the standard app.

Facebook Messenger lets users make free voice calls to friends across the world, while you also send files and also hold groups chats. The application also integrates with mobiles at a much deeper level - it's possible to setup notifications and active chats to be overlayed over a mobiles user interface.

Some will bemoan having to install yet another application on their smartphone, while others will complain at the intrusive nature of Facebook Messenger. However, it's a great little app that will only continue to improve over time with support for video calling expected to be added shortly.

You can download Facebook Messenger on iTunes or Google Play for free today.
