Galaxy Note 3 to be first smartphone with a flexible OLED display ?
The world's eyes are currently focused on Samsung's Galaxy S4 , which is due to begin shipping in the UK tomorrow. However, behind the scenes Samsung are already working on their next major project, the Galaxy Note 3.
Fresh rumours suggest that the Note 3 could be the first smartphone to feature flexible OLED technology. Apparently, it'll have a 6 inch plastic OLED (UBP LED) display.
The display won't be truly bendable , but will be shatter-proof due to its ability to flex on impact. UBP displays are a precursor to truly flexible displays (Samsung Youm) , which are still some way-off being ready for mass-production.
Other benefits of plastic OLED technology include reductions in both thickness and weight. The Note 3's display could be as thin as 0.5 mm and weigh just 50g, which would make it three times thinner and twice as light as an equivalently-sized OLED display.
However, UBP displays are not without their problems with the major one being resolution limitations. Apparently, it's not currently possible to produce full HD (1080p) UBP displays. Our source , who wishes to remain anonymous, has led us to believe that the Note 3 is going to have a 1280 * 720 pixel resolution display.
This is the same resolution as the Galaxy Note 2's 5.5 inch OLED display, which would give the Note 3 a lower PPI (pixels-per-inch) than its predecessor. The other major issue with UBP displays is that supply might be limited , due to the complexity of the manufacturing process.
We can't wait to get our hands on the Note 3 to find out just how exciting Samsung's pioneering technology really is !
