The Universal Mobile Telecommunications System will not be introduced in Poland until 1 January 2005 after initially being scheduled for 1 January 2004. The Telecommunication and Post Regulatory Office (URTiP), upon request of all three GSM operators who hold UMTS license, decided yesterday to postpone the date of launching UMTS. Polkomtel, Polska Telefonia cyfrowa and PTK Centertel believe it is too early to invest money in UMTS, because the infrastructure is not yet ready, against the prior assurances of its providers. Infrastructure deputy minister Krzysztof Heller said the UMTS Investment should also wait until the Sejm passes an amendment to the telecommunication law, to make the sector more transparent. UMTS is one of the major new 'third generation' (3G) mobile communications systemscurrently being developed. |
