Google’s open-source operating system has been racking up version upgrades like it’s going out of fashion, to the extent that Android actually split into two streams – one for 3G phones and one for tablets. Thankfully, the newest version, 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, was built to work on both phones and tablets, with Google stating it plans to minimise upgrades in the future – meaning that your phone or tablet will stay current for longer.
At the moment, only the highest-end 3G phones run on Android Ice Cream Sandwich, with most smartphones running on Android 2.3 Gingerbread. A few tablets, most notably from Asus and Samsung, have launched with Ice Cream Sandwich, with the majority of available tabs packing version 3.0 Honeycomb.
