When Apple launched the iPad in 2010, many people criticised it for being ‘a giant iPhone’. This didn’t slow down sales of 14.8 million iPads that year, and the iPad 2 and new iPad (or iPad 3) sold in even higher quantities.
Apple uses the iOS operating systems on its iPads as well its iPhones, with each iPad available in Wi-Fi only or 3G and Wi-Fi. Despite the success of the iPad, Apple’s market share is likely to wane this year, with the onslaught of Android tablets that are far more customisable, and the launch of the more modern, powerful Windows 8 for tablets.
