Exclamation All in favour of Nokia recalling all the N91's...raise your hands up!!!!

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Since the time I joined this forum after buying the N91...Ive been reading more negative stuff for this phone then positive stuffs. Why is it so buggy...people.We have bought such an expensive phone with so many bugs inside without even knowing about it.We are like guinea pigs for testing their latest buggy product.

Nokia should get things straight for this buggy phone and fast.We have the rights as a consumer.Or start loosing its loyal customers.

Why do i feel that our grouses fall on Nokia's deaf ears???

P/S:Never owned a cell phone other than Nokia....and N91 is the only phone giving me lots and lots of trouble.Nokia should recall this N91... duh ... unlikely!!!!

Absolutely agree .... see my post here: http://www.3g.co.uk/3GForum/showthread.php?t=44680 (reproduced below):

No no no … sorry I just don’t buy this. Please tell me how much Nokia made in profits over the last few years? I’ve no idea of the exact number but it was in the millions yet despite this they charge us £200-£400 for a handset that may or may not work at all or it might work some days but not others.

Look at it this way …. how accepting would you be if you bought a new kitchen oven and it only worked 50% of the time you turned it on, or every other time you used it you had to turn it off and on 3 times to get it going? How happy would you be if you bought a new car and every day when you got a mile down the road it just stopped … you complain and the manufactur's answer is ‘just turn if off and on again, it will go then’. Or you buy a newly built house and the heating only works for 50% of the time. What does the builder say … ‘just turn the boiler off and on again mate, that will fix it’.

Sorry, but this is just b****x. We’ve been duped into accepting this of hi-tech toys and gadgets but we wouldn’t accept it in any other industry or business. We’d send them back and demand a working product or refund. Don’t get me wrong Nokia aren’t the only ones who do this, its endemic across the industry and across technology generally.

It just p****s me off that the likes of Nokia, Sony, Ericsson, Microsoft and all the others produce these products that they know full well are incomplete and have numerous bug and they still bring them to market and expect us as customers to debug the things for them. I couldn’t get the upgrade to install on my N91 but from what I’ve seen of other postings maybe that’s a good thing. What we should really do is all send our handsets back, tell Nokia to fix the bloody things so that they work properly every single time without fail and give us our money back until they do.

Rant over !!!!
But are Nokia likely to do anything ... of course not!!!

I don't have an N91 but own an N80 and it seems Nokia owners hace some serious issues now i reckon if we all joined Club Nokia (It's free) and were to bombard them with calls complaining about there handsets............... well you never know a few hundred calls on a certain day might have some impact.

In my case Im a victim of "Nokia's buggy N91's experiment"(as I call it to be).We are like guinea pigs to test their most unreliable product. In this case the over rated N91.A wonderfull and powerfull gadget...yet so unreliable and unstable for daily usage.

Guess what bro...Nokia isnt doing much to get things straight for the N91...so far...and they are going to start off with experimenting with the so called newly improved N91 8GB Music Edition. Read Thread!!! What the hell!!!

Is he or she who just bought the N91 are at the losing end???Are Nokia really connecting to their customers/people???Are we still going to have the patience to wait for the next sw/fw upgrade and be hopefull that the phone would be just fine???Please let me know dear Brothers and Sisters???
Just got to let everybody know what is really goin on with us and our Nokia N91.

Re: All in favour of Nokia recalling all the N91's...raise your hands up!!!!

Hi

I bought an N91 in the first three weeks. I have been buying the latest Nokia and SE (before that Ericsson) phones because I'm a gadget freak I guess. The reality is there are always some bugs in these devices (like PC computer back in the 1990's early 2000).

There were some frustrating moments with the early sw thats for sure but I can say that since I went to 2.10 I am very happy with my N91.

The new sw and the help they now have made the difference.

Post Re: All in favour of Nokia recalling all the N91's...raise your hands up!!!!

Hi

Lets summarise (from both threads)

- you do not use the phone much for pictures
- you have 2GB or WMA songs (128 Kbps rate)
- you do not install 3rd party applications or themes
- you follow proper PC to Device recommendations etc
- you have installed the sms accelerator (so have I for 8+ weeks)
- you have just recently installed 2.10 (reformatted etc) and is okay however in the past the symptom has been you are listening to music and all of a sudden it skips or paused and voila so you are expecting it to happen

Hmmmm there has to be a reason some where

Question1 : When it tells you HDD unavailable when does this happen? When you try and play music again? When you try and connect the USB ? Is it that you cannot access the HDD no matter what you do?

Question2: WHen your formatted did you do a quick format or a full format. (I believe Full format would isolate any bad sectors etc)

Question3: Are you using your device in Shuffle mode?

Question4: Have you ever tried running chkdsk or scandisk from the PC to check the HDD.

Question5: I know you use the default themes but did you event install one on the HDD and use it there?

Depending on how you answer 1 you can also try this next time (hopefully there is no next time). Its alot faster than formatting etc.

Deleting Databases

Go to filemanager
Move joystick to switch to HDD tab
Select Options
Select Find
Select HDD memory
Type in system in "Find Text" field
See the system folder
then see data folder
erase the whole data folder
Power cycle the device
You can also use your PC and USB mass storage to see it

Let me know

Re: All in favour of Nokia recalling all the N91's...raise your hands up!!!!

Thx a bunch for the reply 101.

Answer 1:It happens when I try to play again.Be it the same song that it skips or other songs. For your info the song isnt corrupted...coz it happens in other songs as well.(depends on the N91 mood maybe)Frustrating!

Answer 2:When above happens the next thing you now....the phone hangs and my entire library is gone...displaying no songs. So I do a full format...plus quick format...plus reinstalling software.(to be in the safe side yet again).Sometimes I cant format it at all using the phone formatting tool...since I cant access the HDD.Even mass storage mode to a pc wont connect. So what I did is,remove the back cover...etc etc...Got it from this thread it worked. After that..transfer all my music, but not all at once instead one folder(artist) at a time.Hoping to be on the safe side transfering. So frustrating!

Question 3:Never.I handle it with care. Not fast forwarding skipping tracks all the time. Most of the time play an album leave it on....and go for a ride or a stroll.

Question 4:After each and every "cycle" ...I do a scandisk and a defrag using pc.Like what the maintainence guide says.Juz leave it on for the night...and go to sleep.

Question 5: Never.Only songs are in my HDD.Even the 1 picture I store in my phone is in the phone memory.Hoping it would not disturb the HDD.Always clear phone memory space of unwanted data like sms.

It will work just find for a while...I remember having no problems the longest for 3 weeks. After that oooops it did it again 2 days ago.Damn!

Hoping to have the N91 ( problematic routine cycle ) for the last time. But I reckon it will happen again. And if it does...Ill try your method you suggest.

BTW...tell me more of your SE phone. Is it giving you any problems??

P/S:Formatted it last 3 weeks before.(lost all songs but still can access the HDD and format it via phone tools)And again...2 days ago.(lost all songs and HDD unavailable.Did the remove back cover thingy)

Re: All in favour of Nokia recalling all the N91's...raise your hands up!!!!

So what about the people like me that haven't had major issues? Do we get a say in this?

Only issue i have with my 4 month old N91 now is the screen size, windows vista support and when i can get the 8GB version.

I totally understand the problems many have had and i had similar issues in the first month, but they all disappeared after version 2.00 update. For me anyways.

I don't think its really fair for these sweeping generalizations. Its easy to see many posts about issues, than posts about how good it is to use. Doesn't make absolute proof that the phone is a disaster.

I really like this phone. Its well built, classy, and its main function of music play is just excellent.

Please it doesn't warrant a recall. What they need to do is improve on it and i believe that already in progress for a future device. I agree this was an experiment of sorts, it being their first hard drive based handset and as such it wont be a smooth ride. That said, it hasn't been too bumpy ride for me.

You don't like it, just sell it off or return it and buy something else.

But hey, this is the internet, i expect no less from anonymous entities on a medium they can say anything they want without consequences.

Same here, i have never had any problems with my N91. I got my first handset about 6 months ago which got stolen, and this had no prolems apart from the themes issue which was fixed with my first fw upgrade. I got my second handset and this has worked like a dream, no issues at all.

Re: All in favour of Nokia recalling all the N91's...raise your hands up!!!!

Joncoffee - I'll do you a swap ... your handset for my handset, then see how you get on and how long it takes you to complain. I aggree, the N91 has just about everything I could want in a phone and would undoubtedly be the best phone I've ever had ... if it worked reliably.

You might think this product quality is acceptable from Nokia, I do not especially when I've paid a significant amount of money out for this phone ... and why exactly should I pay out even more of my hard earned cash to change it for a different one?

Re: All in favour of Nokia recalling all the N91's...raise your hands up!!!!

Hi

Everyone is entitled to an opinion and a hobby. Rudy, Lpains my hobby is to be a kind of gadget detective and this problem you both have had intrigues me because I have never seen it (it happens with age ).

Rudy - youhave given some real clear information on the issue and you probably know the N91 better than many at Nokia

Question 1: Do you have the HDD as your messaging memory?
Question 2: If not then do you a keep your messages (Nokia phones in the past have been notorious about behaving weird once the phone ROM gets full or nearfull). You mentioned you clear it but just wanted to confirm.
Question 3: Do you have keypad tones active?

Any other ideas, Lpains - any ideas about what could cause this.

2.10 sw had been great - I have not been able to reproduce it on mine

Rudy- As for my Se phones - W810. It has alot of annoying sw bugs, low sms memory, volum button issues, some weird behaviour etc. They updated the sw and its better. If you do not care about a 3.5MM jack, camera, WDRM etc then its not a bad phone. My wife uses it now and i use the N91

Smile Re: All in favour of Nokia recalling all the N91's...raise your hands up!!!!

Thx again for the reply 101.People here are so helpfull.Kindness still do exist in this virtual insanity world.

Answer 1: Nope
Answer 2: I delete it every night...no point of me keeping sms.At least for me.
Answer 3: Never...its annoying.At least for me.

The next thing Im doing is to check every one of the songs I have ripped...since you suggested a corrupt file might be the cause of HDD going haywire. The question is how??Play it all night long each and every one of it?Coz every one of em plays fine on my pc.wouldnt noe exactly though, if it plays smoothly on the n91.

Needs time to check.whatever ill find ...ill post it right away.

p.s...thx for the info on the SE.It seems that technolgy comes in a whole package.:P

Re: All in favour of Nokia recalling all the N91's...raise your hands up!!!!

Hi

No problem. So far however all i have asked is a bunch a questions and i have not provided very many answers.

Note that sometimes a PC can play a song that is "corrupt" or has missing data better than an IPOD or N91 because it has the luxury of RAM and horsepower to buffer the lost data. It can be hard to tell.

Lets see if we can figure this out eventually

Re: All in favour of Nokia recalling all the N91's...raise your hands up!!!!

Music101:

Question 1: Not as far as I know. I haven't changed the messaging settings from the default so wherever Nokia locates then when the phone comes out of the factory, thats where they are now.

Question 2: I generally keep the last 10'ish messages

Question 3: Yes I have keypad tones active (why, is this a problam?)

The only other thing I noticed when I went to delete the music library database was that it didn't exist and neither did the directory it was supposed to be in.

Re: All in favour of Nokia recalling all the N91's...raise your hands up!!!!

Here is the tip. In old sw versions music player sometimes "looses" the database. What you need to do is to go to any of your palylist and play any songs. After that all songs will reappear. This tells me that HDD itself is ok, not need to reformat ...just app is not behaving... In any event it is a good idea to run chkdsk on PC before jump to desparate measures

Re: All in favour of Nokia recalling all the N91's...raise your hands up!!!!

ok this is turning into a all out war against nokia... now hold up yo... b4 this continues i gotta get my 5 cents in....

first of all i know what you all are going through its happend to me too but you just gottta keep a cool head and march on forward.... really its not that big of a deal.... if your having major problems take it to a nokia care centre dont be cheap if its not under warranty pay the 30 buks and get it checked out....

secondly ever since nokia announced the 8gb version of the n91 i;ve sorta felt like strangling their necks really.... cause i paid a very premium price for my phone NZD$1500... and i dont want there to be a better version available in 6 months... but what you gonna do nokia wants money and thats how the world goes round.... but look at it this way our phone's are now limited edition... why cause nokia isnt making an inferior product anymore... why would they if you can get something better for the same price you known....

also the issues being discussed in this fourm are from what i can tell... restricted to about 2 members (correct me if im wrong) but seriously look at it this way... nokia's made more than 100'000 handsets easily way over that... and even if 1000 come out to be wrong its really a very nice average 1% that went wrong... not bad i mean just look at this fourm soo many n91's and only 2 with the problem....

now truth of the matter being... nokia's a money hungry fanancial giant... they are not gonna call back all the n91's its too much of a loss.... and really unless we go and protest outside the main office and camp out there for weeks on end... get arrested... make world news.... sue nokia... lose to their worlds best lawyers... make the news again.... get world support to stop using nokias.... we cant really get them to do anything... i mean the internet can only go so far... and the phone is just too old to do a call back on anyway.... too many people own the handsets now...

i look forward to the reply to my comments... lets see what happens...
