Hi all.
I have noticed many people claiming to be able to unlock the LG8120 but will it actually work on other networks even when in a 3g area. ie can you select the network not to search constantly for a 3g signal.
For example the Nokia 7600 is very easy to unlock but if in a 3g area its useless.

Yep the LG can be unlocked and can be set to search for 3G or 2G signals.
Should cost £10-15 It can also be cable unlocked with a custom cable and some software. Best avoid the stress and pay £10!

Also I've now purchased two Nokia 7600s and tested with Virgin, 02 and Vodafone (Vodafone does switch to 3g if in 3G area) otherwise 2G
I think the problem with the switching may have existed with an earlier firmware

When other networks launch its unlikely that their handsets will be set to prioritise 3G services as they all own GSM networks already and dont need to pay anyone else for roaming. It is correct that all of 3's handsets need new firmware to make them fully functional on other networks. The Nokia appears to be the easiest to reset as it has common software with many other Nokia models and the distribution of the service software is widespread.

Can you quote any such places as I can't find any that can do the search for 2g bit

Yep under settings/network/network selection then manual should bring up all the avaliable networks.
I've just done it and found;
3 3G
3
ORANGE
T-MOBILE UK
VODAFONE
02-UK 3G
VODAFONE UK 3G
ORANGE 3G

O2-3G seems to be testing

I don't know if you have tired this but I have and when you set it onto 3 (using O2 2g roaming) it does go there for a while but soon goes back to 3 (3g) as it is set in the firmware for obvious revenue reasons. Unlocking only means being able to accept another SIm but if you are in a good area for 3g services this problem will mean your LG will try and lock onto them and consequently fail. AFAIK - and this comes from a few unlocking services - you cant select the 2g option.

Very useful info for those concerned about the 3 UMTS coverage/switching in their area. The only real solution to this problem seems to be to buy a Motorola A-835 and flex it with new firmware or use a 'factory reset' Nokia 7600. I suspect any of the 3 'exclusive' handsets will be difficult to force to GSM.
