Further to press comments this morning, Orange SA confirms that non-binding France Telecom / Orange framework agreements have been entered into with Alcatel, Nokia and Nortel Networks to provide the 3G radio access network (RAN) technology infrastructure across the Orange footprint.

These framework agreements, which contain no commitment at this stage, have to be finalised, with terms, amounts and conditions to be negotiated in the coming months.

As stated at the 24 June Orange strategy presentation, the Orange 3G network is well advanced in the UK and France. It is anticipated that full commercial trials of Orange 3G services will begin later this year in the UK, with commercial launch expected around mid-2004. Orange UK expects to offer 3G population coverage of over 40% at UK launch in ten major cities, the major rail routes and airports. In France, Orange has been working for a year and a half, developing the 'Villes Orange', Toulouse and Lille, and building 3G capabilities. By the end of 2004, Orange will have 3G coverage in the ten major cities across France.

Orange and Nokia renewed contracts for the rollout of Orange 3G networks in France and the UK. Nokia has been selected as a supplier to Orange for the rollout of its 3G networks. The agreement reaffirms the two companies' ten-year relationship. Orange chose Nokia after a thorough reevaluation of its previous supply agreements in 3G. As part of this agreement extension, Nokia has signed renewed contracts with Orange affiliates in France and the UK for the supply of its 3G radio network.

Nokia is the world leader in mobile communications. Backed by its experience, innovation, user-friendliness and secure solutions, the company has become the leading supplier of mobile phones and a leading supplier of mobile, fixed broadband and IP networks. By adding mobility to the Internet Nokia creates new opportunities for companies and further enriches the daily lives of people. Nokia is a broadly held company with listings on six major exchanges.

What coverage did H3G launch with? I think it's around 60% now isn't it? Did they launch at much below this?

Unless Orange are expanding quickly, H3G will have such a headstart in terms of coverage. I wonder how much stick Orange will receive for their poor coverage? I bet all the people laying into 3 right now will be suportive of Orange when they launch and you can barely get 3G reception anywhere...

True, Orange might have less coverage when it launches, but all it has to do to be FAR superior to 3 is have handsets that work and a customers services department that provides good services. 3 still has yet to realise this!!!!!!!!

Who is this mythical vendor offering handsets better than those that 3 can acquire?

By mid 2004 when Orange Vodafone T-mobile launch all the big guns like Nokia, SonyEricsson, plus Samsung (not big yet) will all have 3G phones ready and they will be of good spec too.

When there is more 3g opereators the phone manufactors will be releasing phones all the time.

Up until now there is only 3 and another network in Austria so there is not much for the phone manufactors to rush out witht there phones.

Orange will have 40% 3g coverage when launched but they will still have there excellent 2g coverage and ur not going to be using 3g all the time so lot of people wont mind.
And i'm sure within a few months orange will have got this to 60% and within 6-9months 80%.

Remember how long it took one2one to reach 98% coverage with gsm (2g) a very long time.

I kinda agree to most of this, services, support, handsets wont improve much whilst 3 have a captive market (i.e those of us and i include myself that cant bear to be without the latest gadget)

As you say once there is competition 3 will have to get the act together, if they dont they will go down the tube its as simple as that.

Once thing i would add though is that i think that the others service providers wont have as easy as ride as what people might think. 3G (supposedly high bandwidth radio communication) is new to everyone! what makes you think they will be wonderful from day one?

As for orange i wound't urinate on them if they were on fire!
