Rexton,

Checked "to see the latest software" on the Nokia site, by inputting my product code 0558752, and was informed I am running latest s/w, v11!

Plugged my handset into NSU, which informed I was running latest s/w v11!

Called local Nokia service point, who had v20 available. Took my phone to them, and 30 mins later.... they informed the "software/phone had crashed at 60% install, and now phone won't switch on"!! Aaaaggghhhhhh

They have now had to send to Nokia to get sorted.

Your product code (I am not asking for it, don't worry) Is it 0558752 by any chance, or other??

Cheers

Kevin

NB/ My handset was bought brand new, UK, unbranded/not network tied.

Cheers

Cheers for that Rexton. With regard to v20. Long story. Ya wanna hear it? I'm gonna tell you anyway!! :-)

Nokia web site "Software news" indeed shows v20 "released 200408".
Nokia web site "See if you can update your phone". (try it!) I input product code 0558752, to be informed "latest version is v11" (which I AM running already, since I updated through NSU from v10.

Tried another method. Plugged my phone in, check for update (through NSU) which informs me I have the latest (v11) software Dohhhh.

Called Nokia agent, and found THEY have v20 available. Took my phone to them "Should only take about 20 mins". Called back 40 mins later, and.... They'd crashed the bloody phone!! "Has to go away to Nokia to sort out", they informed me.

THAT was on Monday 140408. I am STILL waiting the return of my phone, expected back Tuesday. Trying to get any information/update of when it was due back from Nokia or from the agent is like trying to put soft butter up a porcupines ar$e with a red hot needle!!!!

I STILL await the return of my handset. HOPEFULLY it will then carry v20, otherwise all this has been futile!

I guess you have update to v20? Which product code does your phone carry?

Cheers

Cheers Rexton, It's due back (at long bleedin' last) Tuesday/Wednesday. If it HASN'T got v20 loaded, then the last two weeks (and frustration/annoyance)have been in vain.
When I first bought the phone (new, boxed, unlocked/not tied from UK dealer) in February, it had v10. I updated s/w to v11 with NSU, no problem, so can't understand why it didn't update to v20 through NSU. Dohhhh!!

Hi kevin,
certain markets are a little bit "behind" the time. That's why I'm using EURO 3. This allways get the newest stuff without any probs. Change ur prod.code to euro 3 and you'll get 20.0.62 f/w. This supports geotagging.

Hi Rexton,

"Change product code to Euro 3". How is that effected?
Did I not read on here, someone else that changed the product code on their phone, and was having problems afterwards??

I have downloaded a geo tagging application, from Nokia BetaLabs which does the job of geo tagging, albeit a seperate application, where I believe it has now become part of the phone software??

Hi Rexton,

I thought I had read somewhere on here, that someone had changed their product code (using an application) but after they had changed the product code, and updated software, they had problems with their handset (freezing/hanging/needing reboot)??

As you may recall, mine was away for 15 days after a Nokia agent crashed my phone, and when I FINALLY got it back, it had the SAME software on it (v11), which I had previously updated (with no problem) from v10, back in February.

I have asked the question of Nokia as to why v20 is not available for my handset, and after 3 e-mails to them each response is "Take it to your Nokia agent, it is probably because your service provider hasn't authorized the update with their branded phone"!. The aboslute pratts at Nokia OBVIOUSLY can't understand English, as on EACH of my mails I have made it CLEAR that the phone has 1) Been to a Nokia agent (who crashed the phone) 2) The phone is NOT sim locked/network locked/service provider locked. 3) It was bought in UK, sealed box, unlocked etc etc.

My last e-mail to them was rather "abrasive" due to their incompetance to answer the question I had asked!!

Hi kevin,
that problem (freezing, crashing etc.) was mine :-) :-).
Sometimes it happens that Nokia release update in hurry and then problem occurs.Btw it was my fault (some settings weren't properly set up). But otherwise there's nothing wrong.Only thing is that when you claiming warranty repair you must change the product code back to which came with it (usually under battery).

What software did you use to change the prod code Rexton?

Are you having/had coz problems since, or was it purely 'user error'? :-)

Checked out the site, and they are "working on an updated version" as they have been "flooded with reports that NSS will not work with the latest version of NSU".

I'll wait 'til they have completed the update/release before progressing.

Thanks for your help once again.

E U R E K A....

Nokia FINALLY release s/w v20 (for 0558752 prod code). Posted on their web site this morning.

Any other posters that feel they need to correct me on the release date....

v20 was released 080405, but, for some weird reason, this would not work with the above product code, of an unlocked, untied, sim free, "vanila" handset.

It was only TODAY that they have releasedv20 for the above.

Although your N82 was Sim-Free is was a UK variant, which means the firmware had to be modified than approved by Nokia UK for the UK market before it was released, just like an operator version.

For example on the proper sim-free version holding down the # key changes your phone profile to silent, on the UK version it doesn't.

Well advised "Ratkat". That's something else Nokia do not admit to.
Although the "#" to silent isn't important to me, I do tend to use and work a phone (if the function should be there, then it should be there). So, when I found the # was not functioning I asked the question of Nokia, where the response was that it probably needs a s/w flash 9that was when I was running v10. I flashed to v11 as a matter of course (always wishing to take advantage of later s/w releases), but that still didn't have the # working. Asked Nokia again, but they just do not know. Bear in mind their "Customer Care" e-mail service is manned by brainless morons who can't read, understand English, nor have the ability to answer questions. Hey, they are great at copying and pasting though! (by the way, if you DO work for Nokia, you may gladly pass on my comments, as I have e-mail proof of their inability to respond to questions, in a sensible manner!).

Getting back to the #, I have just tried it (with v20) and still does not work. Now, how is it that YOU are able to advise on this, but Nokia are stumped/unable to answer???? Maybe now you can understand what I mean when I state they are useless at product knowledge, in my opinion.

Cheers, and thanks for your constructive feedback.

Kevinx

The reason that UK Sim Free handsets don't have the 'Hold # for Silent Profile' is because of Orange UK's Line 2 Function.
Basically the # key is used for this function on Orange branded handsets and because of this Nokia's UK Sim Free handsets have to follow suit.

it is a pain unless of course you are on Orange and are signed up for Line 2.

(Orange Line 2 - If you're a pay monthly customer Line 2 gives you two separate lines on your phone so you can separate call types.

As well as separate numbers you'll get separate bills and it's far less expensive than having two phones.)

I must admit, I am like you if a function should be there I want it working, hence I changed the product code on mine to euro1.

kevinx
20-05-2008, 11:06 PM
I was aware of the line 2 scenario (on Orange), Ratkat, but wouldn't have thought this would matter, if on another (Vodagroan) network.

As previously stated, it's just because it "should be there", that I make an "issue", but rarely have need to silence my phone :-(

I have communicated to the Numpties at Nokia, and they first suggested updating the s/w (Dohhhh). They then could see no reason it didn't function. I then asked whether it had anything to do with the product code range (as you had previously mentioned with regard to s/w). They were stumped!! But they did say they'd get back to me, once passed to their R&D department. We'll see..

Cheers for your feedback, and comments.

Thanks

Guess that's just about right (although I have never had a problem with Nokias before, in having s/w updated).

They FINALLY put it down to the product code (which is what Ratkat-above-had posted), although that was after they suggested (time and again) that I contact my service provider (although phone unlocked/sim free/"vanila"/not network tied - new out of the box, as opposed to ME having had it uinlocked). i HAD already advised nokia of that, but the numpties still suggested that.

Finally got it done though, and then I posed the question as to why the # (to silent) doesn't work. AGAIN they suggested I contact service provider etc (Dohhhhh!). When they FINALLY checked, that it was sim free/untied etc etc, they took a further 5 days to contact me to advise this is due to my handset being a UK variant, as opposed to European (again as Ratkat had advised). They claim it was UK sales spec that had the # (to silent) disabled. When I asked why, they could see no reason for this.

Anyway, finished my rant now. Cheers for your comments.

Cheers

Maybe they have vanilla brains i.e. no specific product knowledge, just brought in to make up the numbers/temporary staff (take it from me they can be hard to train about technical stuff if their background is customer service/fob off department)

Hi, more to the line 2 problem, i have a N82, love the phone but im stuck on FW v10, i am on my 3rd one now. I got it as an orange upgrade, its sim free as i got it from the CPW, i tried to upgrade the FW to v 11 on 2 of them, that went through fine, but when i try to switch lines from line 1 to line 2, the function isnt there any more, so i have put off upgrading for now, untill i know it works properly, although i know how to change the prod code, via NSS it isnt viable to do, as it voids warrenty, as i found out with my N95, nokia regester every change so no matter if you change it back to the original, they know, i have seen the computer screen alerting the nokia shops of this, and they wont have a bar of it once it comes up, so i would recommend against product code change at all cost.
So if anyone knows about the upgrade and if line 2 works after could you let me know.

I did call Nokia, and the didnt have a clue about line 2 or what it was Nokia officially call it ALS, but that didnt rattle any brain cells for them either when i called it that, so thay couldnt help me on that one.

Thanks
