View Full Version : Do you think that the N96 is a worthy upgrade from the N95?

People seem to have mixed feelings about the N96 so I thought it would be interesting to run a poll on people's overall initial impressions.

I think Nokia could make a few improvements... 7 or 8mg camera, larger LCD... can't tell for sure untill i have tried the N96 for myself.. I hope the music quality is a lot louder, the GPS a lot faster for a start... i know the display will be the same quality as the N95. i would like to see Nokia come up with a crystal clear display like on the sharp 903 and it would be great to be able to play games to a PSP standard too. am i asking for too much??? :)

Same battery as N95 - BL5F (950mAh), no graphics accelerator (a step backwards from the N95), no improvement in camera from N95, no Xenon flash and DVB-H redundant in the UK.

For me the DVB-H is its killer feature. Apart from the bigger screen and improved memory its just not a massive development on the N95 for me. Although the FM transmitter function is quite nice.

The 16gb memory was a definite selling point for me, but Sandisk are releasing 12gb & 16gb microSD HC cards pretty soon. So unless I read about some other amazing new features being shoe horned in at the last minute, I think it's more a sidegrade rather than an upgrade for us UK folk.

No doubt in Q4 of 2008 or Q1 of 2009 they'll release details of a N96 32gb or something like that and then that might be a worthy upgrade.

Would just additional memory in a revised N96 really make it a more worthy upgrade? It wouldn't for me.

Well I'd feel a lot happier about something like that, than just a 16gb version.

Battery life... apparently they have sw.hw improvements which appear to make the N96 similar to the N95 8Gb, but I wish they'd kept the larger battery.

They've also reduced the camera aperture (less light) and I'm still figuring out if it will be slower (less powerful processor)

I'd still prefer a lens cover

Overall i'ts give and take between that and the N95 8Gb IMO. Main things in its favour are twin leds and the sw updates + the longer video/music time + faster USB connectivity.

It will be interesting to see when Nokia really do release this phone. To be honest with other players launching handsets with better Camera's it's a case of will this phone be out of date by it's launch date.

There is something so simple with the Nokia's that keep people coming back for more. Lets hope that they do shoe in some more features by the Launch date to make this handset even more desireable!

The best feature for me on the Nokia N95 is the SIP settings. I started using them on the N80 and I've got to tell you that ever since I discovered sip settings, I've never been happier. The amount of money I have saved over the last 3 years has paid for my handset sim 3 at least 6 times over!

To sum up if Nokia have a more stable sip feature on the N96, then I'm more than happy to purchase the N96 Sim free!

Short answer: Possibly.
I don't mean to hijack the topic of this thread but I would like that question answering for myself so I need to clear up a few points about the N95 8GB.

I want a good web browsing experience. From what I have seen of the N96 on YouTube its touch sensitive 'ring' could be a very useful addition. However, the ability to reliably run SIP Voip is, for me, a prime essential. If, for whatever reason, it didn't do that on both WiFi and 3G then I would not be interested.
I haven't even got an N95, the offerings on '3' look good and I am tempted by the N95 8GB. The question is will the browsing be easier to navigate and be generally better on the N96 8GB?
I was tempted by the HTC Diamond but it uses Windows and I can't say that I am so keen on Windows. Obviously HTC have recognised some of the Windows deficiencies, especially in regard to the browser in that they have replaced it with Opera.
What is the browser like in the N95 / N95 8GB?
Is it easy to navigate and does it properly support javascript, flash and PDF files?
I am a bit confused by the 'Free Skype' on '3'. I am not a general user of Skype, I by far prefer SIP, I use for my home phone. However Skype does have it occasional uses.
The blurb on '3' seems to indicate that 'Skype' is available on compatible phones ( which I assume includes both the N95s) but it doesn't require a Net subscription. So, does that mean that this would work on an N95 for free with any download not counting if due to Skype, or is it not really Skype but a callback service of some kind that works like Skype?:devious:

Hi,

I was wondering if any of you who own an N95 are thinking of upgrading to a 3g iPhone instead of a N96.

Cheers.

I don't yet have an N95 but I would not consider buying an iPhone on principle.
I don't like the idea of Apple having control over what I can and can't do. Just one recent example I've heard of is that Truphone (which I don't use anyway as I use other voip services) can only be accessed via WiFi and not via 3g.
You can be sure that any application for the iPhone, that may affect Apple's bottom line, directly, or indirectly (by way of the operators), will be blocked or appropriately crippled. I prefer to go with something more open.
I find the whole Apple worship thing sickening and I just don't want to be a part of it.
I am considering a HTC diamond but I don't like windows. I do like Nokia and the N95 does all that I want except I would like a touch screen - the N96, with its touch ring seems to be a step forward.

The N96 is in no way the sucessor to the N95 despite what its index name may suggest.

Personally if you like the look of the N96 then wait for the N85 which will use the same form factor as well as having a lens cover on its 5MP cam. It will also be much more mass market and not as high priced as the N96 which is acually inferior to the N95 in the sense that its running on an old ARM9 CPU.

Thanks.

I concur with the people above who mentioned SIP features.

I too use the SIP function of my N95 virtually every time I'm out and about, being able to use my cheap VoIP connection anywhere I am over 3G is a big plus for me.

The N95's SIP functionality is indeed a bit quirky, things tend to crash a lot if VoIP is running in the background, so if the N96 were reported to have better and more stable SIP functionality, then I would consider it for an upgrade.

On the stability issue, my N95 also constantly freezes when I film videos (so far out of about 20 attempts I've managed to get only one video, about 9 seconds long), so if the N96 could promise better stability overall, it would be a good contender.

All that of course by the end of 2009, when my contract expires... :D

Is there anyone who is thinking of upgrading to an N96 now having seconds thoughts since the N85 has been announced? They both seem so similar but have slightly different strengths. 16GB memory and DVB-H (which we can't use in the UK yet) vs 1200mAh battery and an OLED screen
