View Full Version : 3G Data Card - User Permissions

We're a business user trialling a couple of these cards and we can't them to work without the users being a member of the local admin or Power Users group (Windows 2000 Professional).
Vodafone's tech support has been useless, I can't believe a service like this which is aimed at the business user requires such diabolical Windows permissions - we run a tight ship and simply giving users such open permissions is not an option. Surely we are not the only company which works this way?
Before I dive in with registry and file monitoring tools to discover exactly what permissions are required, has anybody been down this road already and have a solution?
Thanks in advance.

Ack - no ones replied yet I see.
I'd have really expected Vodafone tech support to be able to work through the problem - I'd strongly suggest trying to talk to someone more senior.
I'd say a pretty large number of companies don't restrict their employees control of their laptops. I'm not entirely sure why the datacard needs Admin permissions, unless it just needs to be installed under Admin and made available for all users to access. Unfortunately I use XP on the majority of PC's and laptops I use, so I wouldn't know where to start with 2000.
But seriously, if Vodafone wants your custom, you should really be trying to get a callout from them, or at least a resolution to your issue. Surely user permissions is something *someone* there will know about, given all the trials etc that have already taken place. You could always try and get out of the contracts and try Orange instead... better coverage :P

We do need to install the card and the associated software with an admin account. Windows 2000 and XP are so similar that I reckon a fix for this with XP would work on W2K.
We have managed to speak to one of the developers who wasn't able to help us much. I agree, someone at Vodafone should know what permissions are required, its just locating the right person.
We are a Vodafone corporate customer but are moving some of services to Orange so we will be trying their 3G card in due course, its just a solution for the Vodafone issue would be helpful.
If we have the patience and the time to run regmon and filemon tools against a machine while using the 3G card and we identify the exact permissions required I'll post the results back here.

We use some software that requires the the HKEY_CURRENT_USER registry entry key to be loaded to work correctly.
We have got round this by installing the software in the "Shared Documents" folder.
Not much help but at least you know whats causing the problem now.
