Hi,

It's been a while since I bought a phone from an actual shop (I normally buy online), but I was thinking about getting myself an iPhone from my local o2 shop at lunchtime. I was just wondering what sort of ID / proof of address is required at an o2 store these days? I realised when I was already halfway to work that I forgot to bring a utility bill in case one was required. I have a photo drivers license and credit card - would those be ok? I also printed out a BT bill from my online billing but I don't know if that would be any good?

Thanks in advance

I wouldn't have thought you'd need any for iPhone, since the activation/credit check is done through iTunes in the comfort of your own home (and you can buy them from the Apple Store with no ID).

Ah - hadn't realised that's how the iPhone was done. Hope you're right and so I don't have to end up ordering online and waiting till tomorrow to get it!

Just to confirm that yeah - I only needed a Chip and PIN bank card, though as they didn't have any 16Gb models in stock I couldn't get it anyway! I'll have to try and continue my hunt for one after work I think!

just avoid carphone warehouse cause they ended up on watchdog concerning mis-selling of so called insurance, deal with an o2 store cause from experience they are more customer friendly than those cpw guys who love commission ££££ only

CPW would be a last resort - though I'd never touch any insurance offers from phone retailers with a barge pole anyway. Thanks for the warning though!

You won't need any form of ID for the iPhone. Otherwise, the URU we use in the stores just require a proof of address (your drivers licence) and proof of signature (your debit / credit card).

As per the insurance, I wouldn't usually touch it either, but I dropped my iPhone and am sorry I didn't :( It's £6 a month on top which isn't too bad... but you can get insurance through your bank as well.

Oh and you can ask them to request a phone from a nearby O2 store... it won't cost you any extra and means you won't have to hunt around for a 16gb one at other stores. And yes, avoid CPW at all costs!

I wouldn't buy an iPhone yet. Rumours of a 3G iPhone being released v. soon! :-)

Yeah, we'll find out on the 9th of June at the Apple World Wide Developers Conference (Apple WWDC) 2008. Fingers crossed! But AT&T in the US did say all their devices will be made 3G by the summer with the exception of the Blackberry range.
