Not trying to start a flame war, but just curious what most people would prefer to buy. Both phones specs have been released and both phones are due out around the same time for about the same price. I currently have the original N95 and probably will keep it over both these phones for a while any ways. As I don't see either one warranting spending another $700(U.S). Not that much improvement over N95. Nevertheless I'm curious which phone will attract more users and why.
Like you said,a little to soon... but I prefer SE, because it have a real screen, not the same boring 320x240 resolution.

I'd like to see a xenon flash on the S.E. Disappointed that the N96 still doesn't have one. The screen is definitely a plus on the S.E and the full qwerty keyboard. The pluses on the N96 are the built in 16GB memory, slightly higher 5.0MP camera and S60 over windows mobile 6.0. It's starting to look like all the rest of the features on both phones will be similar.
Design on both phones is nothing revolutionary. The arch slider is mostly P.R and the N96 I think took a step back in going with the N81 look. Don't get me wrong both phones look great, just nothing that says wow.
Either way I hope both phones compete well with each other and bring more revolutionary concepts and designs from other manufactures to spur competition. Then we all win!

IMHO I still think the n95 8GB is better than the n96 so I definitely won't be upgrading. I will probably go for the Xperia X1 or fingers X the iPhone with 3G. I'm going keep my n95 8GB with the new handset and then decide which one suits my needs the most. :)
Nokia has really missed the boat I think. The n96 is NOT a successor rather a comparable device like the n82. There will be a lot of people looking to upgrade from their n95-x and Nokia don't seem to be providing it.

Agree... N96 does not deserve the upgrade.

If sony can make a few last minute changes to their X1, like uping the Megapixels on the camera to 5-8, adding a true flash and adding built in memory, at least 8gb. That might be enough to sway the N95 users to them instead of the N96.
I'm in no hurry anyways to upgrade. Just awaiting the next firmware update on my N95, hopefully it will have flash lite support.

Good points. I think as far as Nokia purists will go most will agree that the N96 is not by any means a sucessor to the N95 or N95 8gb. Its aimed at a different audience. N95 8gb is really your do it all phone.
The N96 is optimised for video and music playback. Overall its a nice phone but a few things which bug me:
1) The chipset used in high end Nokias since the N93 up until the N95 8g is the OMAP TI 2420 which allows for the N game gaming you see. Nokia decided not to go with this for the N96, instead they went with the Nomadik chipset from ST Electronics. This has heped optimise the N96 for longer video and music playback but as a concequence it cant do the n gage gaming that you see on the N95 8GB or N82. Personally I dont like it as its using ARM 9 which is a big step back for me. Although judging form the videos we have seen on youtube the OS speed doesnt seem to have been affected at all.
2) Now this could have been only on the proto versions knocking around but the focal length on the N96 was only 5.2 compared to 5.6 on the N82, n95 8gb ect.....Although its not a huge difference you cant help but think the N96 may not take as good pics as the N95 8gb/N82.
3) 950mah battery. I swore never again with any Nokia that used this battery but they have done it again. However if you look at the data sheet it definatley states longer times for playback of video and music but the standby time is less than even the N95 8gb. A few reviews so far have pointed to the N96 still making it through 3 days in general usage but like all Nokias the acid test will come when it hits retail so ill reserve my final thoughts for then. Still Nokia why couldnt you have used a 1200mah battery like in the N95 8gb?
Here is an early hands on with the N96.

Im really looking forward though to X1 although. The qualcomm snapdragon is a great processor and now with SE fully implementing the 3D drivers (something TYTN2 and co didnt do) and the high res screen this could really prove to be a great phone. People will moan of course that its WM and in all fairness I wish it was WM7 but im definatley open to this baby. Judging from the screenshots ive seen so far though it looks like WM 6.1 isnt that nice on the eye compared with the Pro version.

Bav, according to the link above the OS on the X1 is Windows mobile 6.1 Professional. Don't know how reliable the source is on whether or not it's 6.1 Pro or just 6.1. Has anyone heard officially also if the X1 is using LED flash or Xenon. I did see one video of the phone where the guy handling the phone said it has a full flash for the camera. Here's the link to that video.

When I read the title I thought "What kind of question is this? X1 without a shadow of a doubt, dude!"

ive been an N95 user since last April and cannot fault the phone (apart from snapped off battery cover (user error involving night out and stairs at a club lol)
im currently now using my unlocked MDAIII compact and have started to warm towards WM6 (i upgraded) more than Symbian. as far as i have seen, the GUI on the N96 looks very similar to the N95, maybe some more colour in the menu, but all in all, it will probably operate in the same fashion as the N95 but with more storage.
not sure if im going back to my N95 to be honest. getting used to WM6 now so will probs get the Xperia depending on my budget and if 'she who must be obeyed' lets me.

The N96 is starting to look less and less attractive an option when you compare it to the Sony and now this

N96 before came to market, is already outdated... itīs almost an N95 8G... but the new ones (N85, N97...) are around the corner... itīs always that!
