I've just got the phone and have been pretty impressed.

However the pc software is confusing me a little, maybe I'm just being lazy by not properly giving it a go and learning the ropes but it seems a bit complicated.

So I've gone the er old school way of directly uploading files on the actual drive itself i.e 'mass media', data transfer etc.

I've put on 30 songs and the music player takes some time (2-4 secs, which is decent) to load at first whenever you open. I'm planning to upload about 2 gigs worth and probably more in due course..will this increase the loading time?

also I place the mp3s directly under the folder 'Sounds', will there be any problem?

The pc software offers to use Windows Media Player to sync - this scares me already! Is it more efficient?

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Another 'problem' I'm finding is that you can't create any 'physical' sub folders in the music or images folders!

I know you can create playlists or photo albums but I don't want to look at 400 pics/songs in circulation! Is there any way round this?

Cheers for help or advice. I think it will take me a good couple weeks of hardcore use and learning before I get to grips with it :(

I'm using the Nokia Music Manager now and it seems OKAY. A very simple and direct piece of software that seems like a VERRRRY basic iTunes. Oh well.

Also I have Chinese language songs and titles that appear in squares. I've read about and it seems you have to update the software? Using the update software I suppose but how do I know if it supports Chinese?

My friend who has the silver n95 says they have to back up everything as a firmware upgrade wipes everything off..will I potentially have to back up 8 gigs every time too?!!!

I just got this phone too. However, after installing and trying the PC software, I hated it and uninstalled it. The application for scanning the PC for images and video immediately started scanning without asking where to look and hung after finding a zillion images and videos in MS Office.

I have transferred some music, but found it very slow compared to my iPod.

OMFG!!!!1111oneoneoneone

I absolutely hate the supplied software! It hangs and crashes on the littlest things. Like I said it's an extremely poor man's version of iTunes...but I have to use it because I have no other choice?

I think you could try manually creating your own folders and putting songs in Sounds/Digital but would it recognise?

I'm really liking the specs and functionality of the phone but the interface, the actual phone software and just general usability is starting to bug me.

For one I was told it was only with the latter firmware upgrades that you could actually view text details i.e what time it was sent etc?! Yet you still have to manually click Options then View Details when it could have easily included the time on INBOX view or in the actual text! ARGH.

It does things the long way round and as a seasoned SonyEricsson user, I guess my comparisons are very high.

However, I get the impression that I was right in choosing this over the w960i, a phone that I waited monnnnnnnths past my upgrade for!

Anyways, I'm just gonna continue rambling in this thread as a blog of some sort to my discoveries and solutions. Hopefully you can all input as well!

I guess it is an enjoyable and er eventful learning curve experience with this phone haha.

Oh yeah RealPlayer and FlashPlayer are installed on the phone already what file formats does it play? I'm guessing .3gp, .rm and .mpeg4 because so far I've tried mpg and avi yet .flv (youtube etc like files) don't work?!

Aren't .flv flash files?! .swf files work though.

Also where you do manually (i.e on mass media drive) put your videos? My Videos, Images?

Lets see if I can answer some of your questions:

First thing I would say is go to nokia.com and download the latest version of PC Suite. With the latest PC suite (and I think a couple versions before) you can simple drag and drop files from your PC onto the Phone. (Check the storage settings before you start. Its under settings -> settings ->n95)

The music player will always take a couple seconds to load up regardless of how much music you have. The Images + Video Gallery will take slightly longer the more pictures and videos that you have.

Never used Windows Media Player to sync so can't comment.

Physical sub folders arn't really important. You can make them if you wish but I've never found the need. In the music player you can view the music by artist, album, playlist, genres, composers or all music.
As for the images + video you can put them in whatever album you want, then choose to only view a certain album. I've got about 800 pictures and videos so I use the view album feature quite a bit.

Not too sure what you mean here. If your talking about upgrading the firmware then yes you will loose everything stored on your phone. If you are talking about updating Nokia Music Manager then no you will not loose everything each time you update.

The application for scanning PC every time you start up can be stopped. Check under the settings.

The latest n95 8gig does have better support for flash video. On my n95 classic I have emtube installed which plays all my .flv files.

Hope these help.

Thanks a lot, that really did help clear up a few things.

I went to the Nokia website and downloaded the PC Suite, which I thought was just an updated version of the one I currently had.

How wrong was I. The CD Software that came in the box was actually Nokia NSeries, a generic piece of software for Nokia phones, whilst the PC Suite is more fine tuned and stable for n95s!

Physical folders on the actual Mass Memory drive or being able to have them on Images section of the phone are quite important to me. As you said if you have 800 pictures you'll have to scroll through them all unless you individually add them to albums. I know you can hold the edit button and copy but what if you uploaded 800 pics and you wanted to add pictures varyingly?

On a pc you could easily make 5 new folders name them and drag and drop. And better also have folders (albums) in the Images section to separate them. Oh well just have to get used to it.

Cheers for clearing up the loading times thing.

So for every phone firmware upgrade, I'll have to back up everrrrrrything on the phone eh, that sucks. They separate Phone memory and Mass Memory already so why doesn't the firmware upgrade separately too?

Anyways I look at the emtube software but I can't seem to install it? I get a certificate something error?

Thanks for everything!
