Is anyone else experiencing data card connection problems?

We use USB modems to connect and we transmit photographs using either Fetch or Transmit FTP clients. That was until 22nd January 2008! Since then we have been experiencing either complete failure to connect to our FTP server or an inability to transmit (especially if someone else is transmitting). Checked every piece of hardware and software that could be responsible and everything seems fine. Aware of others with the same/similar problem. In touch with Vodafone but no joy thus far. Another busy weekend of football fixtures looms and desperation is setting in!

Had same problem at Sheff Utd on Tuesday night. It seems that there was a similar problem with Orange, T-Mobile and O2 at the same time. (talking to colleagues at the game)

I did find that when I logged on to a BT Openzone wi-fi hot spot just after the game, things went through no problem.

Let's hope it's sorted by Saturday.

Frank, there has been some upgrade's to VF UK's network, specfically regarding the internet APN. This may have impacted your internet access. This should be resolved now, if your still having problems contact VF.

Dahis if the issue was present "on all network's" it's unlikley to be the same problem in reality.

Hi Frank,

Can you just clarify whether your having problems just connecting to Fetch and Transmit FTP clients or are your having problems connecting to any internet based programme.

I use the 3G USB modem. I haven't used it in a while (since last year), but trying to connect via FTP today has been a nightmare. It's either extremely flakey or does not work at all. All other applications (email, web browsing, etc) work ok.

Many football togs I work with are having the same problem. Some of them have called Vodafone but have been told that there is not a problem.

I think they have over subscribed the network, now those of us who use them for a living have to suffer.

Thanks Vodafone !!!!

I can e-mail, browse and instant chat, but ftp, forget it. However when I find a wi-fi signal in the football stadium, ftp is fine.

Has this anything to do with Vodafone and Orange sharing masts?

Anyone at Vodafone any info for us all?

It's working again this morning.

I must remember to setup sftp sometime on port 22 as a fail safe.

Some of the guys up here have been told by senior staff at Vodafone that it is due to a BT interconnect fault and should be resolved by first week in March.

Personally I use T-Mobile so the longer this goes on the better for me, more pics in the papers!!

Hi everyone,

This issue won’t be caused by the future plans for Vodafone and Orange to share masts, this hasn't as yet been implemented.

May I ask which area you are located?

We are aware of an issue in Scotland and a resolution is being looked into at the moment, but we will need to know if this issue is affecting other areas so that it can be investigated.

Thanks for your time

Techgirl, many thanks for the input on this matter.

I have had the problem in Sheffield, Bolton, Leeds, Preston, Wrexham, Barnsley and Huddersfield all recently.

Thanks for your reply,

Would you be able to contact me via email so I can get this issue investigated? It's possible that it could be related to the network fault already being looked into.

Please complete Vodafone's online contact form (https://online.vodafone.co.uk/dispatch/Portal/appmanager/vodafone/wrp?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=Page_Help_ContactUs&pageID=PCU_0002) so I can look into this. Ensure you complete all the fields and include the code FIT135 so that the email is directed to the Forum Team.

I already have a list of the areas you have experienced problems but if you can elaborate on these for example post codes that would be great. If you could also advise us of dates and times you have had problems and any error messages experienced that would be extremely useful.

I look forward to your email

I had the issue on Sunday 24th Feb in Fareham, Hampshire.

It was ok the following morning on the 25th. I shall know later this week whether the problem returns.

Kind regards,

Hi

Just a quick update.

I’ve spoke to our engineers and it seems that the BT connection that we use to connect our network to the internet is faulty. One of the cables has been shut down meaning that we're effectively sending less traffic out to the internet. As one cable is down increased pressure is being put on other cables

The network works on a hierarchy with Voice and text being the most important. As one cable is down, increased pressure is being put on other cables causing them to be at maximum capacity 98 - 99 %; meaning that some traffic will need to be dropped in favour of other traffic.

Our engineers are working on a fix and have estimated that the network will be working to its full potential on the 3 March 2008.

If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask

Yes, Thanks Techgirl.

Huddersfield on Sunday was terrible for me and a colleague I was sat next to, also on Vodafone. Oldham Athletic FC on Tuesday night was great, no problems and a fast connection.

Something looks to have been sorted out somewhere.

(Shocked to hear BT is involved somewhere along the line)

Hello, I am using a vodafone 3g usb modem. I live in Birmingham B16, but since some days I can't get 3g signal, just 2g available, and it's quite frustrating...
:(
Any problems with the line?

Thank you.

Just to add that Bradford v Dagengam on Saturday was again no problem. Good connection and speedy uploads to ftp server.

Blackpool V Barnsley this Tuesday night, I'll see how the system is in the north west then.

Hi,

I'm sorry to hear you're having problems connecting to the 3g Network on your USB modem.

It's possible there's a network problem in your area which would cause the issue you have described. I've tried checking this for you with the post code supplied but it wasn't specific enough and therefore I couldn't pin point your exact location.

Rather then you giving your full post code on the forum would it be possible for you to contact me via email following the procedure laid out above. I can then look into your issue at a network level.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Oh... on another note the problems experienced with FTP should now have been resolved, if you done still experience any issues please let us know so we can look into it.

FTP now does seem to be working OK.

Got to use it for work tonight, so hope things go smoothly.

I'll be at FY1 6JJ tonight

Quick update, Blackpool v Barnsley was great tonight. The connection, not the match :-)

No problems with connection or FTP.

Looks to have been sorted.

Thanks Techgirl for all your advice on this matter.

The procedure laid above to send email does not work, could you please investigate B16 8FP? We are still getting 2g signal, but there should be 3g coverage here...
Thank you.
