View Full Version : Sat Nav for the N95 8gb

Other than the Nokia application is there another sat nav that will work with the internal gps on the 8gb model.
I have spoken to Garmin and they have no plans to support it and I've looked on the sites for co-pilot, navigon and they all require SD cards.
So has anyone managed to get a sat nav other than Nokia's working on the N95 8gb.
Cheers

Err... Garmin Mobile XT DOES supports the internal GPS... im using it on my N82. :)
EDIT - Sorry yes, you will need an SD-Card though I think. That's why I would never buy a phone that couldn't take memory cards, it's a complete pain in the arse.:(

There is no problem with Garmin on n95 8GB either. The 8GB storage ACTS exactly like an external memory card. The only difference is you don't have a slot to insert/remove.
Please don't confuse people about built-in memory. You can connect the device via USB which will see the 8GB storage like external memory card ( e: ).
You can install Garmin via USB so can tomtom, route66 etc. Anyway why would you only want the software supplied on a "small" memory card? You have the hassles of swapping it out with your bigger memory card.

It works fine on the 8GB like @ez2remember said.

I actually rang Garmin and specified my N95 8GB and was told it would not work!! and they had no plans to support it!!! It did sound like a scripted answer to an oft asked question.
If you say it works on your N95 8GB I'll give it a go.

Hello Ez2remember, thanks for the reply. I've updated my email address now. Just downloaded garmin from your link and installed on my phone.
I'm just trying to get the program to locate the internal gps... so far it hasn't found it but I've only been looking for 30 seconds with my gf looking, annoyingly, over my shoulder.lol

So far, I successfully installed the software onto my N95, however I'm having trouble finding internal GPS, plus no maps are included.:(
Do you need to find GPS first, before you use Garmin's online content?

Have you added both SE.UNL and GMAPSUPP.UNL files to your Garmin folder?
If so, then go to Tools on your phone menu, click File Mgr, find and click on Garmin folder then highlight both SW & GMAPSUPP UNL, delete the .txt at the end of both files.
Restart Garmin and away you go.:D

I can confirm that I have garmin mobile xt working on my n95 8gb from three, was hell to install as i had to use parallels - i had to make sure parallels recongnised the n95 before mac os x otherwise iphoto would load and blah blah eventually cause me to run out of paracetamols.

It all works now. Just one thing, it uses a lot of space on my memory card so i'm going to get an 8 gig card. Will it still all work if i copy the whole of my current memory card to a new one?

Quick question regarding Garmin XT if i may?
I've followed the installation instructions, got everything up and working (detailed maps etc) BUT now when i plan my route and hit go i get the message "Waiting for better GPS accuracy" with a yellow bar that fills to about 90% and then stops. Even after leaving it for 25-30 minutes nothing happens (this whilst in the car).
Can anyone suggest anything i can try ???
Thanks in advance

@demason - yeah it should work but if it doesn't you can go through the installation process again.
@josewick - you don't have no email in your profile.
@paulcollins10 - Not sure what the problem is. I don't have any issues. I suppose you could backup your phone. Format the memory card, hard reset your phone and reinstall Garmin again.

Pick the latest version. ;)
For some strange reason there are two identical links for the latest version.
You will also need to DL the basemap and support files then email me (a few post above) for instructions.
I think this is the last help here. Too many requests. lol
If you need instructions just email directly.

Yeah i got mine to work yesterday, not without a few set up problems though!
Did a round trip from home to south west scotland and it was almost spot on. About 95% accurate with location of car on road. Still a great program to have nonetheless.
The two main problems I had when setting it up were ...
1) Garmin could not find internal GPS... but this was resolved by restarting the prog after replacing the SW.UNL and GMAPSUPP.UNL files. Oh and going into settings/system and making sure internal GPS was selected in the first menu.
2) When trying to actually use the software it came up with an error about detailed maps... This was my fault as I had installed "Europe" map not "UK+Scotland" D'oh! So once this was installed, and the GMAPSUPP.UNL file replaced, it worked fine.
A previous poster said they had a problem with a message saying "waiting for better GPS" or something... mine does that too.. but as long as its in clear view of the sky, and weather permitting it should find it within a minute max. Make sure assisted GPS is turned on. That's all I can think of.

rank1, The problem i have is the 2nd problem you had but I dont seem to have the option for uk+scotland.
I am also trying to use the europe map which is obviously causing my problem. Where can I get the uk+scotland map from?
Thanks in advance....

The cost is negligable a connection is made only until gps is locked thereafter your flying on gps only. If you lose connection it reconnects. It helps but can be turned off but you might be waiting for a minute or two longer without it.

"Spell city/Postal code"
