I have just got a Tesco Internet Phone as my home phone. I picked a local number (Southampton) with the area code 023, the number then starts 81xx xxxx, all other numbers round here start 80xx xxxx so that seemed odd.
I can't call the number from my Vodafone, it works from T-Mobile so i know the number works.
I phoned Vodafone and they said that they didn't support VOIP, that seems odd as they don't have to support it - just route the call to a landline number.
Can anyone help, I don't really want to give my landline number out to people if some of them won't be able to call it.

This will be because Voda haven't configured the (probably fairly new) number range into their systems.
Call up again and complain that you can't call the particular landline number but it works from other networks (e.g. BT, T-Mobile etc) -- don't mention the fact it is VoIP (it shouldn't matter to Voda, but mentioning VoIP to a mobile carrier automatically puts their backs up).

Thanks, I thought mentioning it was an Internet phone might have confused the issue, then couldn't back out of it.
Only thing is there will be a note saying I asked about it now (the lady was clear about adding a note to the file)

Hi Turquoisefish,
Happy New Year!
Sorry to hear of the problems you have been having using your Vodafone mobile to contact your new internet landline.
This is due to the calls being routed via VoIP, I understand that you have a standard landline number but the calls are still received via the internet. Vodafone do not support this type of call and therefore you won’t be able to call your internet landline from your Vodafone mobile.
Hope this answers your query.

Absolute hog-wash.
I'm on Voda and have never had problems calling a number of VoIP 'landlines' (as both 0845, 05xx and regular 01/02 numbers).
For 0845/01/02 numbers, Voda don't know how the call terminates to the subscriber (i.e. whether it is over VoIP or not) -- they only know which telco owns the number range.
And don't forget, T-Mobile just were ruled against in the High Court and forced to carry calls to Truphone's number ranges (which are obviously VoIP).

I would suggest you call your VOIP company. Vodafone obviously have not set their switches.
AFAIK there has been a ruling by OFCOM recently which says that they must handle these type of calls

mobile networks need to embrace new technology not snub it.

Thanks for the advice.
I am sure the problem is the number being in the new range rather than specifically it being voip, but perhaps only voip use this new range.
I might try Tesco but the problem is obviously Vodafones in my opinion

how BT route the call is irrelevent. it still goes in and out of a switch.

I finally got it sorted, phoned again, they saw the note and kept asking me about VOIP and I told them I was making a normal phone call (they seemed to think I was trying to use Skype on my mobile or something).
Got put through to technical support who tested it and said it was failing at the first switch, they would look into it and contact me in 3 days. Never heard back but tried ringing my phone and it worked.
