Up until this morning, I had a really nifty WLAN search underneath the calendar entries on the front screen of my N95. However, Ive woke this morning after charging the phone's batteries and the icon has gone. I can still get on the net via our home router, but i prefered using my WLAN search. Any ideas how to get this back?

go to tools/settings/general/personalisation/standby mode, then you can turn active standby on/off and select the shortcuts and active standby apps you want hope this helps.

already tried this. All the active shortcuts are there, the button shortcuts too. This particular WLAN search appeared as text under the calendar/todo list on the same screen.

and having looked into other things to resolve this, everytime i select wlan wizard in the main menu, i get a pop up saying 'system error'.

What firmware version are you using?
I had an issue with my search: internet & my content on version 20
firmware, it was caused when i restored a older firmware backup.
A hard reset (resets & clears phone memory) fixed the problem (hold *, 3, & Green call button & power on phone, release once it restars properly to be sure)
Another issues i had was with N-gage on the new firmware, it didn't work even with a hard reset, i had to reinstall the firmware

but i don't understand why a single item would disappear. A hard reset will wipe all my numbers, videos and the like from my phone memory, right?

Yes a hard reset will wipe all data on your phone, you should do a full backup or you can do a selective backup, even a manual back.
Strange problems occur, technology hardware & software fail & do strange things that their not ment to, i cant explain it, bad programming, unexpected conflicts manufacturing faults & others.
