View Full Version : N95 8GB built in Help application problem

Has anybody else noticed a problem a problem with the built-in help application on the N95 8GB?
I get 'Out of memory' errors when trying to access it from either the Help application itself or by pressing options/help inside other applications
It seems to be related with the amount of applications you install, for example on a 'clean (no applications installed) setup it works fine, but as you start to install more applications it gets flakier and flakier (all mine are on the phone memory not the mass memory), after you have installed about 15 applications it stops working all together.
If you un-install a couple of applications it starts working again. Also it doesn't appear to be related to a particular application, it doesn't matter which ones you uninstall, it can be the lasts ones or first ones, nokia or 3rd party, make no difference.

I've just tried to replicate that error on my 8GB but it's working fine. I've just counted my applications in Application Manager and I've got 42 installed.
I have no problem opening help from Options in a number of applications or by going to Help directly.
My only thought is that since most applications come with a help file then one of them may be corrupt or conflicting and reinstalling all your applications, even to downloading them again, maybe the best answer.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

No Ian thats a lot of help, I am sure it is a application causing a problem, it's just a case of finding out which one.
So for the process of elimination....
This is what I currently have installed. is there anything in the list that you DON'T have installed?

I've deleted the ones that we have in common from your post. Not many it would seem.
After finding all sorts of problems after debranding, upgrading and then reinstalling I followed yours and pa49's advice and did a clean install with all applications on Phone Memory. I still have 91.6M of 134M left.

OK.
Here's the $64,000 question...
Do you have any of the same prog's as ratkat?

It is definitely related to the amount of applications installed.
I did a *#7370# and reinstalled everything one app at a time last night (to phone memory), trying help after each install.
I did the following test, to check help was working.
Open 'Help' from Tools/Utilites/Help - switch tabs in the help app to the one entitled '*abc' and search for 'Add Text'
After 6 apps had been installed Help worked fine, however after installing the 7th (Best Profiles) I got an occasional 'Out of Memory, Close application error' followed by 'Memory Full'
So....I uninstalled Best Profiles again, and help worked fine, next I installed Sports Tracker with the same result as above.
As I installed more apps the help application had more and more memory errors until as before the help application gives out of memory error immediately.
So, what have I learnt?
No single app causes this problem, it seems to happen after a certain number of installs (6?) so I can't pin it down to a rogue app or corrupted help file.
Shame really as apart from this everything, including all 3rd party apps work spot on, and as I rarely use help it is not a huge issue, just annoying

I would have thought, after your test, that my Help would be totally useless.
My money is still on one of the prog's, or maybe a combination of them. You both seem to have a few Handy prog's as opposed to my one. Might I suggest doing the same test, but leaving the Handy stuff until last.
I may well be wrong but it's just a thought.

OK ratkat,
You can shoot me!
I have just repeated this from your post:-
Open 'Help' from Tools/Utilites/Help - switch tabs in the help app to the one entitled '*abc' and search for 'Add Text'
and I get the same message about Memory Full as you.
However, in every other respect (as far as I can tell) my Help is working OK and at lightening speed.

I can't load help at all, either directly from tools/utilities, or from inside another application - i get 'memory full' immediately... never get it on any other application

LOL, yes I have just been playing and in some apps by pressing options/help, I can get help to work, in some apps it works in others it works until you change page.
I thought the same as you regarding the Handy Apps, so I installed then last, the problem started long before I got to them, I also tried uninstalling all apps, as you start to uninstall help just starts to work better and better until finally with just a few apps left it worked perfect.
But there is no logic to it, just seems to start getting worse with 6 apps installed, and it doesn't seem to matter what apps they are.
I have a feeling it is something to do with Demand Paging ?

Just done the same test on my N95-1 (v20) which has virtually the same prog's as my 8GB and Add text is opening fine.
Looks like it is an 8GB problem.
Having said that I have now found that in Help "abc" mode I cannot open anything and get:-
Help:
Memory full. Close
some applications and try
again.
On some I'm getting:-
"no data"
when they open. Others won't let me in and I get the Out of Memory and some freeze up so that I have to remove the battery and still others take me back to Utilities with the message:-
Application closed:
Help
KERN-EXEC 3
Looks like I spoke too soon... it's now happening on both the folders and abc mode and getting worse.
Have just had to reboot the phone again by pulling the battery out. Have gone into Help folders mode and no problems there have opened a dozen or more. However, the moment I select "abc" my Out of Memory problems start with both folders and my phone has frozen again.
Does this help?

I think you're right about the Demand Paging.
It occurs to me that since upgrading to v11 I haven't used the "abc" in Help.
Once you pointed that out in your post, and I replicated it, my problems started.
You swine!
I find that after pulling the battery and restarting the phone that so long as I steer clear of the "abc" mode in Help then everything is fine.
* It's only on the 8GB that I'm getting this. The N95-1 on v20 is working fine. I've just given it a good going over in Help "abc" mode and no problems.

guys, i have turned my phone off, removed battery, rebooted and then gone straight to tools/utilities and tried to run help, and i get memory full immediately... all i have on autoboot is rotateme and mobilemail
Ian Ross

I have nothing on autoboot and so long as I don't use "abc" I'm fine with Help.
Can you disable Rotateme and Mobilemail one at a time and reboot to see if one, or both, are causing a problem?

Have just removed both apps from autoboot and rebooted, and still the same problem. Only thing running is taskman... it seems like the problem i am having is slightly different though since i can't get help to load at all (memory full immediately).......

Mine was identical to yours until I did a reset last night and reinstalled the apps, now help works slightly.
So to be honest I'm not going to worry about it, as others have it to a greater or lesser effect, it proves it is a software issue and not just a problem with my phone.
So I guess it will get sorted in the next firmware update.
Might be worth you both posting in the thread I started on the Nokia Forums

Hi Ian, you have a lot of applications loaded there, I take you use them all. what does the DRM Common Solutions do? Will it help restore lost DRM keys?

Nokia do take notes in a lot of forums including their own so hopefully they'll fix this bug. I haven't noticed it before because I rarely ever use the help.

I've the same on my N95-1 firmware v20 . . .
I un-installed several applications that I didn't use, and the help-function in the application itself, is working again . . .
But when I start the Help-application itself, I get a memory-error . . .

I had the same problem with my N95.Thanks to the remarks of all of you, I tried desinstalling several apps. Now everything is normal. I had two instances of Wellnes dairy (one in memory card and other in phones' memory) and several others.
