View Full Version : Too many people on a 3 cell turns HSPDA off?

I posted about this in another thread but 3 have given me an answer.
Several months ago we purchased Mum-in-law a 3 Broadband Modem and she was getting rock solid 3.5G. Recently her modem, and our visiting N95s are restricted to 'standard' 3G.
According to 3, even though the coverage map says 3.5G, if there are many 3subscribers connected to a cell, apparently the HSPDA reach suffers.
Anyone else herd of this?

that is correct. the system gives priority to R99 customers (ie, normal 3G) over HSDPA.
just so you know, 3 384Kb users will max out a single carrier cell.

just 3 people?

3 @ 384Kb depending on backhaul, PA and baseband. Dont forget, it also reserves capacity for Voice as priority number 1 too.

Thanks for that, Planner. HSPDA access is possible up to 400m or so away from the actual transmitter but any further and it becomes 'normal' 3G (albeit with full strength).

Depends on if your out in the open or in a building. the more walls you have to go through, the closer you need to be to the mast.

I have a mast in eye sight from my room and love it cause i get full 3G signal. Due to get HSDPA any day now so would get a really fast speed.
At work (for 3) i get full HSDPA and using Opera Mini on my 6120 i got speeds of 1.9mb and 1.8mb
Comparing that to the 0.4 and 0.9 i got on T-Mobile i have found 3's signal much better and far more stable.
On helping out other stores earlier in the year (mainly Bridgwater) i found the T-Mobile signal up be up and down up and down like crazy and even when getting signal the data would do nothing so i would have to reset the phone.
Thankfully not hat that problem so far on 3 :).

interesting. HSDPA goes in the following stages.
1.8M
3.6M
7.2M
14.4.
for you to get 1.9M, 3 must be running 3.6M now... so your only getting half of what you could :)
rumour has it T-Moblie will be going 7.2M within the next year.....

the standard is 3.6 but various factors change the speed which is why 3 advertise 2.8mb. For what im using 1.9mb is more than enough in an emergency.
7.2 would be out next year anyway

why would you advertise 2.8Mb? how very odd..
thanks for the info on when they go 7.2 though..... hope they have their transmission sorted for it...:)

3 have been doing 3.6Mb (16QAM) ever since they launched. It's the maximum, but I guess they advertise it as 2.8 because they don't want everyone phoning up saying "I'm not getting 3.6" & possibly because they're throttling by HLR profiles?
If you use 15 codes you can get 10.2, which is much easier to implement in the Ue than 14.4. There's also 0.9 & 1.2 which are 5 codes but with QPSK, so battery life should be fantastic (well, acceptable). I just wish 3 & TM would launch HSUPA, as 384 seems really slow...
