View Full Version : Data use on 2G restricted to 'Planet 3'?

Have noticed this problem with all phones I have used on 3. A SE K800i, SE W880i, SE K610i and a SE K770i - all 3 branded. Had both 'internet max' and 'mobile broadband lite' on my account at different times over the last few months.

When using any applications when inside 3G coverage they work fine. Such as Google maps, Opera mini, POP/IMAP/SMTP, Google mail.

When used in 2G coverage the only thing that I can seem to access is the 'Planet 3' portal.

Do other people experience this?

Thanks,
Colin

This would be the case.

However, download Opera Mini from mini.opera.com on your phone browser, ans you should be able do view whatever site you want, even in 2g areas. And because of the way Opera's proxy server compresses the data, browsing is a reasonable speed, even in 2g areas.

I do. With one roaming partner i get full data, the other only planet three.

What happens when you ignore any message and just try typing a url in? As a 3 customer, I've never been refused net access (well, since the dropping of the walled garden) regardless of who I've used; 3 for 3G, o2 or Orange as their 2G partners...

O2 never had a data agreement with 3.. I believe Orange do, although only for 2G

Is orange the newer roaming partner? Any idea when the O2 roaming agreement ends?

Because of this, i can't get a data connection when i'm at my SOs flat. No 3G, and the orange signal is a bit weak, so even if i select orange manually, it still falls back to the O2 after a few minutes. Very annoying, as i'm primarily a data user.

Asked three if they could send me a sim update to stop my phone trying to roam with O2. They said they couldn't, but that the roaming agreement was coming to an end over the next few weeks anyway, though i have no idea if that's true.

O2 never had a data agreement with 3...Erm, they did. Here in Manchester, I used to access the full internet via 2G/o2 (once the walled garden fell) prior to the roaming agreement changing over to Orange.

O2 always carried data while you roamed (from Three) as do Orange. Whenever you are in a non-3G area you'll get the basic 'Planet 3', but if you have an internet add-on, you will get the same internet access on O2/Orange/Three (albeit slower in non-Three 3G areas).

That may be the theory...

...but it isn't what happens... at least for me, and the person at the head of this thread. Doesn't seem to be phone/SIM specific.

It's not that there's no data at all, the 'outside video area# planet three still comes up etc), it's that any attempt to connect to the outside 'net is just dead, no return packets.

Anyone else out there who experiences this differently, please could you test it? Manually select one non-3G roaming fallback partner, then try internet data connection, then try the other one (they both come up as "3", so it's hard to work out whether its O2 or Orange -- just try selecting the first non-3G "3" in the list, try it, then the second non-3G "3", and try that.)

It would seem one gives a full internet data connection, the other doesn't.

It's nothing to do with Planet 3 or data servers, and Opera Mini certainly doesn't circumvent it (I use it as my primary browser, I should know -- it still has to connect to the OperaMini servers via a regular internet connection to work you know!)

problem is we need a .sis application like symbian v2 had for N70, 6680 etc your N95 ( even a generic one ! ) will favour Orange roaming over o2 via your sim commanding it is 1st default roaming network and thus you cant get full access like on o2 roaming as 3 wants you roaming on Orange - MSN/Yahoo messengers roaming on Orange are no problem on EDGE or 2G, just net access is, then again we have a few weeks of o2 roaming only now :(

Orange is pants where I am - there is a lot of 2G transmitters in area out of order and faulty one's are being replaced with 3G as per Orange's orders - thanks for nothing 3, a roaming partner that places prority on its OWN 3G customers that I have no access too

Hi! I am having a very similar problem. I am on PAYG and can get data access via the handset via Orange (I think), although I have to manually type in URLs, and only have the cutdown Planet 3 by default. However, I use the handset as a modem with my laptop, and this is not working on 2G (it is fine on 3G). The webpages are being found, as it comes up with a page not found error if I use an invalid URL, but with a valid URL it just says connecting..., waiting... and nothing further happens till it eventually times out. I assume this is because of the browser I am using (have tried IE and Firefox). Is there any way I can pretend to be using a mobile browser? I don't know whether O2 is the same - I am unable to select this network. Has the roaming agreement with O2 now ended? TIA!

When it works on your mobile browser, it should be working on your PC browser as well. The symptoms you describe sound like the problems many of the rest of us get -- when roaming (if it's 2G, it's roaming), only through one of the two roaming partners do we get a full data connection.

GGr, 3G/2G internet coverage gets worse, I haven't gone for the full smart phone gumbo again after.......
my N73 had "software issues" according to 3 customer services,
my 6630 had " software issues" according to 3 customer services
and now my basic 6500 classic has "issues" according to 3 customer services.
I can't complain about OperaMini 4, it gives 100% easier browsing than Planet 3 which I find slow and irritating.

What about connecting a phone to a computer, Does that still work in 2G?

Sorry I'm still suffering phone and call centre rage so ...........errrr ......mobile phone? Why should I want to connect it to my computor? The idea of getting mobile internet was to to be mobile and get internet without carrying around a laptop or god forbid a full tower PC under my arm

Yeah, but it's nice to have a full browser so when out and about it is really easy to log onto the internet without a WiFi Hotspot...
