Had posted this previously on another forum, it will hopefully be helpful for those wanting to transfer messages manually if you dont want to bother with a backup / restore / if you want a clean memory card, as this usually causes problems when using different firmware versions, software conflicts eh, its like windows all over again but on da mobile
The best way not to lose your messages is store them on your memory card. In addition, i use backup but for specific items like notes & bookmarks by removing some of the check boxes.
I've confirmed that the N95 stores messages in
Private\1000484b\Mail2
The following was written previously when transferring messages to the N73 from a N70. But if it were an N73 to N95 its the same folder names, if your not bothered with other data/programs on your memory card, no need to worry about the folder if your message store is already the memory card then.
Ok, i thought this would be useful as i've not seen such methods described while i was trying to transfer my messages i just played around with it until i figured out how to actually access my messages on my new phone, by that time though i had attempted other methods & now had multiple message stores which complicated everything. There should be an app to manage stuff as i store and keep quite a lot of txt's with like info & other details.
This is the way i did it....
The best way to move your messages in my opinion is by transfering it onto a memory card, this is a good and easy to use function on the Symbian OS. If you go into Messages>Options>settings>Other
You will find a menu with memory in use, change it to Memory card & it will ask it you want to copy/move messages to memory card, say yes.
You messages are now on your memory card, should be safe.
From one of my backups i know the N70 stores it mail in
\System\Mail (if u remove the memory card and access it through a card reader, making a copy of the mail directory is all your need to do.
It gets a little complicated if the new phone stores the mail in a different directory, as i found so on the N73, which stores its mail in
\private\1000484b\Mail2
Now i cant say for sure whether that 100484b\Mail2 will always remain the same, it could change slightly. The best way to find out is on your new phone use an empty memory card, set the memory card as message store & the phone will create the mail directory, find it & simply, copy all files from your backup ie as in the case of the N70
The files from within the N70 goes int othe new directory in the N73 memory card. Try it but keep a copy of the original files untouched just in case you mess up. But really there should be an app, cause my problem is multiple message stores, & i cant just merge them myself cause the phone uses an indexing sort of thing.
(N70) \System\Mail
to
(N73) \private\1000484b\Mail2
This is quite cool as all your archived stored mail, inbox, sent, drafts, my folders & even folders you created yourself are all there.
Hope this help
