View Full Version : Cannot get the GPS to work!
OK I've downloaded the maps on to my device. I'm using v20 firmware but I've had this issue with the v13 firmware too.
I go outside, load up the Maps application and wait up to 5 mins, still no fix. I load up the GPS Data application and it says "Waiting for GPS".
Am I missing something out?
YES, and so is Internal GPS
What's the postioning server?
supl.nokia.com
Access point is 3
Anyways it shouldn't need the A-GPS to pick up a fix thou.
No, but A-GPS makes it faster. Your choice, up to 10 minutes, or 30 seconds?
I doubt the GPS standalone would take 10 minutes to get a fix. Even the older technology (non-Sirf) GPS receivers take a max of 2-3 mins.
Fair enough then I've got A-GPS enabled and still not able to get a fix. Any suggestions anyone?
The manual gives a wait time of 10 minutes.
Have got got X-series or another data addon with 3?
Nah no addon's. You're gonna tell me that I need an addon now, right?
In that case I'll just stick to using TomTom on my N95 with my external GPS receiver... the only reason I wanted to have the Nokia Maps working was so that I can use GPS when in someone else's car.
Well you can't use A-GPS then because it needs network data. Unless you have a 3 data add-on you have the walled garden.
But my understanding is that A-GPS is used only to determine your approx. location based on the location of the nearest network mast. ie. does not send or receive any data. I'm sure this is true because my old NEC e616 had A-GPS built in and it did exactly that, and I had no data plan then either.
And besides, there is a "network based" positioning option there too, what would be the difference between this and the A-GPS?
lo, A-GPS sends data. There' a databse of GPS satellites, the data lets the phone know which sats to look for basically.
Network based isn't active in the UK.

Go through the advise given carefully and see if you have any joy. Do you see any satellites under the left soft key options?

have you got the phone keypad slid open?
There is still a long lag time if you are out of range for A-GPS to function. I am in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and even with 5/6 satellites showing on the screen you are looking at @10 minutes. No I am not using it to navigate the ship! A-GPS makes a huge difference.

here is a alternative place to look at
You know the small bit of plastic on the bottom of the handset where the charger and the data cable goes in. If you pull it out the gps antana is actullly on the back side of it. It is connected to the main 'mother board' by a tiny bit of copper touching the other end of the mother borad so if your comming loose or you have changed the case(most of which don't include that bit of circut), you can have extemly weak or almost no signal on the internal gps.
this is a link to the picture of the back side of the bottom piece shows the GPS antana
