View Full Version : Broadband Plus incompatible with X-Series?

Had a call from 3 CSR's earlier, after I requested broadband plus for a month, as I'm losing ADSL for 3 weeks, who informed me that you can't have laptop access via a phone with an active X-Series account.
The woman tried to get me to agree to cancel X-Series (and pay 13 months off the contract!) just to get Broadband Plus for 1 month, when I explained that was not going to happen, she just said "call back next December, and we will enable the addon.

How can it be incompatible ? I can connect the laptop using my N73 without the addon, I just wanted to do it legitimately :o

Why cant you just cancel x-series and add the broadband add on then in a month cancel the broadband add on and put x-series back on your account? Normally add ons can be cancelled at any time after a minimum of 30 days or 6 months if taken at the time of taking out the contract. Or did you get a free slingbox out of three?

I took the slingbox.

I had a similar problem a couple of months ago. I had to cancel my x series in order to switch over to the broadband plus. I was still able to use my phone phone internet, skype, etc (so effectively the x series still works) and I cancelled the broadband plus after 1 month, reverting back to my x series.

Hope this helps

If they wont let you switch from x-series to broadband because of a sling box deal you got then put a PAYG sim in your phone, get the £5 internet add on on that and hammer the hell out of it as a modem for the month. Many ports are blocked but if your mainly using it for browsing the internet then youll have no problem.

Hello sorry to hijack but does that work?

I have a pay as you go Nokia N73 and a laptop which I sometimes use away from home.

Can I just get a fiver internet add on and use it through my laptop to get on the net?

What connection do I need between pc and mobi and what software do I need?

Thanks.:bandit:

Does that work?

I have a Nokia N73 on pay as you go. If I buy a £5 net add on can I use it on my pc?

How is this done?

Thanks.

How do you do that? I want to connect my Nokia N73 P&G on 3 to my laptop so I can get on the net away from home.

Thanks.

Hiya,

If you wish to stay within the T&C's then you need to add Mobile Broadband for £10 to your PAYG sim, the £5 add-on is for phone browsing only. Mobile Broadband add-on has more ports open (as far as I am aware) and is designed for using your phone as a modem for your laptop.
go to
my3
Buy Add-ons
scroll down past internet and stretch and you should find Mobile broadband
the options are for
Broadband Lite 1GB £10
Broadband Plus 3GB £15
Broadband Max 7GB £25

This will keep you within T&C's

Make connection either via Nokia PC suite and nokia cable (just click on connect to internet) or use bluetooth connection.

If I were you, I would just use the x-series to connect to the internet for the three weeks required. I realise you said you would like to do it legitimately, but unless you're caning it (heavy downloads etc), and especially as it's for less than a month, three are not likely to notice.;)

So if mine now works with the £5 internet add on then will it work with the mobile broadband with the same settings?

Is the mobile broadband faster? What speeds can I expect to get using my N73?

Thanks.:)

The £10/£15/£25 mobile broadband add on will run at exactly the same speed as the £5 internet add on but will keep you the right side of 3's T&Cs with regards to using your mobile as a modem.

As the N73 is not HSDPA enabled, the fastest speed the phone can theoretically act as a modem is 384 Kbps on the 3G network.

If you plan to often use the phone as a modem and speed is a massive issue then you may be better offer getting one of the HSDPA modems which will allow you to connect at up to 3.6 Mbps (although up to 2.8 Mbps is only currently supported by 3).

Thanks for your reply GSR.

Are they the modems that they are selling for £100 (PAY AS YOU GO)?

Do you know anywhere you can pick them up cheaper please?

Once I have one of the modems is it just a case of buying a topup for that month?

I have checked the coverage map and it looks like Rhyl is covered, does anybody here use theirs in the Rhyl area?

Thanks.:glasses:

Yeah it is the Huawei or ZTE Modems that are available on PAYG for £99.99 or for FREE if you subscribe to an 18 month contract (on the £15 / 3GB Plus tariff) or a 24 month contract (on the £10 / 1GB Lite) tariff.

You could probably get one of the modems off eBay cheap but am not sure how much success you will have using it, unless you buy it with a 3 USIM, as you may not be able to get it registered by 3.

On the PAYG option you can buy a top up whenever you like and they last for 30 days from date of activation - or until you have used up the data allowance!

Rhyl looks like it has excellent coverage according to the 3 website. When you check the coverage map make sure you look at the "Turbo" coverage as well as 3G because Turbo = HSDPA which therefore equals speeds up to 2.8 Mbps.

Sorry I haven't replied sooner, but after moving, and losing the ADSL for nearly six weeks, this is the first chance I've had :o

After a number of calls, and escalating the issue, they still insisted that the Broadband addons are "incompatible" with x-series, I'd love to know how, all it means is accept £10 or more a month extra for people willing to legitimately access 3g via their laptop!

Anyway, in the end, I did just connect on x-series, and was not billed any extra. It just seems stupid to have to risk a disconnection when you are actually offering to pay for the package.
