Nope, it is used solely by the phone. No way of extracting GPS, NMEA or other data from it.

An update on the speed of getting a lock. Have been trying for the last half hour to get a lock. Have 5 satellites showing on the screen but still no fix. I am en route to Pitcairn Island from Bora Bora - perhaps the satellites speak a different language out here?!
