After looking at the 2 phones side by side the N95 8GB is thicker on the rear housing than the standard N95. This allows the camera to be recessed and the thicker battery. What I could not tell, as Vodafone would not let me take the phone apart, is whether or not this would fit the older N95's so at to allow the use of the BL-6F battery.
Anyone had them apart to compare?

Yeah I have them both and the housing on the n95-2 will not fit the n95-1. This is because the cut out for the camera is not the same size. The n95-2 is significantly smaller.
There are other ways to skin a cat though... I've almost manage to get it to fit perfectly. With the firmware update increasing RAM, demand paging and the possibility to use BL-6F there is no reason to upgrade. ;)

The battery housing for the N95 8GB has clips on the side in different places to the N95-1 and won't go on an N95-1.
The bigger BL-6F will fit in the N95-1 but the battery cover won't then go back on. It may be possible to grind down the ribs on the inside of the N95-1 battery cover to make it fit with the bigger BL-6F battery. Or use a clearcase and don't fit the battery cover at all.

lol, I own both at the moment. I'm selling both n95-1 and n85 8GB. Depending on which one sells first, I will keep the other. The 8GB is still better but I can sell it for nearly twice the amount so I'll let the selling decide for me. ;)
