Hi,
I have been bouncing back and forth with T-Mobile customer services all day in regards to their web'n'walk Max service with no real joy!!!
I have a sim free Nokia N95 8GB HSDPA compatible phone and would like to know:
1. Can I use my phone with this service without having to install any additional T-Mobile software onto it?
2. Can I use my phone as a (HSDPA) modem for my laptop when indoors? Does my laptop require any specific software to use the service?
and
3. When not attached as a modem to my computer, i.e. when I'm out and about, can I access the service via my phone using its onboard internet client software?
I am specifically interested in the service for its HSDPA usage. Is there any way I can check for HSDPA coverage where I am situated? I am based in South East London, Lewisham.
Finally, does anyone know what the current 'fair usage' monthly quota is for the web'n'walk Max service?

regards

I can answer some of your questions
You don't need extra software only the settings for T-Mobile
You can use your phone as a modem. You will need the modem drivers which should be on the CD that came with the phone (or from the Nokia Website)
The phone will operate as normal using its own clients when not connected to the computer.
Can't say about HSDPA in your area, but it has worked for me whenever there has been a 3G signal
Max fair usage is 10Gb

Hi DaveC,
many thanks for your reply.

I will be using the service my both an HTC TyTN II & Nokia N95 8GB. Will my phones auto-detect these setting or can they be manually applied?

I take it that I simply launch the modem application when I wish to use my phone as a modem and disable it when I simply wish to use the phone by itself, correct?
I'm still in two minds in choosing between T-Mobile's web'n'walk Max and 3's Broadband Max packages.
Apart from the UK, I will need to gain access to my service in Europe, America and Asia (Japan, Taiwan, China etc etc). Which of the two operators offers the better broadband service in terms of coverage and usability? Do you know whether both operators offer access to WiFi hotspots as part of their package offering?

As far as the modem is concerned, the TyTn has a program called "Internet Sharing' which is simple to set up an allows you to connect or disconnect at will. You can use usb or bluetooth. I don't know about the Nokia.
Using abroad is expensive (T-Mobile £7.50 per Mb) don't know about 3. T-Mobile do have a package that includes wifi. Not sure of charges.

Exactly how does this work out of interest?
Is it a case of running the program, then connecting via USB? Or do you need to do more on either the TyTN or the PC? e.g. install drivers.
I have briefly tried this, but didn't seem to be getting any Internet connection, despite the phone being in a 3G area, and showing a data connection.
I'm also looking to move to T-Mobile with a sim-free N95 8Gb, however is W&W available to SIM-only, pay-monthly customers? I can't seem to find anything on their website.

j-ho i used to work for t-mobile retail and then sim only refered to the voice and sms elements not data. i have however seen on this and other site that if you take out a new contract with web and walk plus or max you now get free wi-fi access which should be a major benefit to any customer
