Demand paging! I was never that tempted to debrand before (the T-Mobile branding is negligible) but that might be worth it..

Demand paging! I was never that tempted to debrand before (the T-Mobile branding is negligible) but that might be worth it..

Trust me.....it's worth it!

Available for unbranded N95.
Things I have noticed:-

Boot up time about 50% quicker.
Camera a lot quicker on opening (if shutter is open the camera can be started with a long press on the camera butto, same as 8GB).
Quicker picture taking
Menu's open quicker
Used to have about 18M of RAM on Startup. Now around 30M.
With Contacts, Handy Taskman, Gallery, Music Player all open I still have 20M.
New Music folder
New Utilities folder.
Search: Internet and My content (same as 8GB) on standby screen.
N Gage and Music store added.

I have both the N95 and the N95 8GB and, IMHO, this firmware brings the N95 up to the 8GB standard. The 8GB still has around 50M more RAM with the above applications open but what the hell! This is the upgrade I, and I guess others, have been waiting for.
Now let's see what it does to the battery!

Wow, that's impressive 30MB of free ram + demand paging. I think 30MB free is enough for most users.

It makes me want to keep my old n95 classic... It shows you how good both phones are because I don't want to sell either now. lol

Ian Ross

Want to keep both the N95 and N95 8GB now.

Now that you're all busy upgrading the firmware on the N95 perhaps you would like the Nokia N series 4 theme that appears on the 8GB and on the latest N series PC Suite 2.0.

Try this:-

http://forum2.mobile-review.com/show...=50369&page=12

The default icons theme is as close as I've seen to the 8GB.

Sadly the classic has been sold on eBay although we are arranging to meet up on Wednesday so it's not finalised yet but I really don't want to sell it now... Perhaps I should sell the 8GB instead because it's worth about twice the classic at the moment? I'll upgrade the firmware tonight when I get home. It'll be interesting to see how good it is?

At least the new owner will have a better toy. ;)

BTW your link is broken.

Does anyone know whether the Nokia Maps on this new firmware version still has the tracking feature?

randomfan
26-11-2007, 04:14 PM
Another new thing is the ability to have multi level folders in the menu, which is useful. However I don't particularly like the new default menu layout, as all the new system folders make things too fragmented. Ah well, I'll probably spend the next 3 hours moving icons around to make it exactly to my liking... :)

Still, well worth it for the demand paging :D

Ahh balls. :-(

I use the tracking feature on Nokia Maps all the time. You can still plan a route I take it, just that it doesn't centre the map around your current location?

Are there any decent alternatives to Nokia Maps that would allow either full navigation or tracking?

well Orange should pay Nokia for the firmware upgrade....

thats the problem, 3/Orange/o2/t-mob/voda dont want too as it gets costly when Nokia have to remove & re-do parts of the generic software for each mobile operator as per thier specs !

N95 was my first generic mobile and I will be generic from now on - so much easier getting updates/problems sorted

almost 50% update done :D

All of the above (had a crash this morning though).

However, none of my installed apps are running, including the ones I paid for - grrrr. How can I remove the defunct icons, though? They're still showing in the menu and in App Manager - trying to delete them gives a "cannot remove" error.

Not very happy with the update. It does run faster, but i've lost some apps, my sms backup is corrupt, the maps app now takes ages to find a lock. This may all be as i restored the complete backup, with settings too.

Am I able to reinstall the firmware? I'm going to try a fresh install when i'm back home.

The camera is so much faster now!

ez2remember
27-11-2007, 09:51 AM
It depends how you installed your apps before. It's best advised to install apps to the internal memory because if you upgrade the firmware or ever use hard reset to restore your phone to factory settings, all apps will be formatted/deleted giving you a "clean" phone. Internal memory is also faster. If you have installed apps on your memory card you may have to now format both mass memory ( e: ) and do a hard reset to get rid of icons, settings, program links, program pointers etc. left over.

Backup what you need but don't backup settings as this can cause problems especially if you've come from a branded firmware.

When upgrading firmwares I always advise to do it from a clean phone.
1) Backup what you need but not Settings! e.g. contacts, sms, emails, pictures etc. You can skip this step if you just want to backup your contacts. After you done step 2, just use the backup contacts to memory card option then move onto step 3.
2) Format mass memory
3) Hard reset phone
4) Upgrade firmware
5) Upload maps again using maploader
Viola...

For what it's worth, I found GPS to be faster now.

I don't know about reinstalling the firmware, I've read it can be done, but it's probably worth performing a format first, it only takes a few seconds, just enter *#7370# followed by 12345

You should be able to reassign Themes to any button you like.
Menu > Tools > Settings > General > Personalisation > Stanby mode. Then Shortcuts or Active standby apps.

Never use a back up and restore across a debrand/upgrade.
This info is widely available and really does prevent many issues.
Reinstall all apps to your phone mem and you won't get future probs and you can change cards without loosing anything.

I know the last time I upgraded the firmware you had to use a PC. But Im hoping with all the Nokia are trying to do to combine N95 usage with Macs they may have also sorted this section out :)

I doubt you can de-brand with a Mac as you'll need NSS to adjust the product code.

Certainly improvements all round - slightly faster and more responsive. Good changes to how the web browser handles sites and switches between pages, nice to see the camera now tells you status of saving images. Overall nice tweaks revitalising the phone.
BUT
The GPS is nowhere as good as the last version. Before it would lock onto satellites within seconds (yes - it was that fast!) but now back to the speed of the first sw version and I had the N95 the day it came out. So despite the re-design of nokia maps it is impossibly slow - what a shame as the last version was so good to use
Oh well...

the music player has a new Visualisation available

After upgrading to v 20.0.15 I've had problems using my phone as a modem on Web 'n' Walk plus.
I'm not receiving any error messages, but web pages frequently aren't loaded - just get a blank page and the "Done" message at the bottom.
It's the same in IE6 and Firefox, on XP and Vista (on different boxes).
Sometimes the page will load, sometimes it will load without images, but mainly pages are just blank. Refreshing/reloading a 'blank' page will occasionally yield the proper page, and refreshing/reloading a proper page will usually yield a blank page.

Anyone else experiencing similar, or have a solution?

I dont know what people mean when they say Key Press Bug

It depends on what version firmware you were on before? The last version (before version 20) had a bug that ignored key-presses every so often (probably 30 or 40 presses).
I don't think the new firmware has fully addressed this problem - it's not as bad but it's still there... Unless I have a faulty keypad :D

Yes, you have a branded phone, as yet v20 is too new to be picked up by networks. You have 2 options:

1. Wait (boo)
2. De-brand and go for it (best if you ask me)

Ok found the problem need to format the memory card, just tried an old one I’ve got, formatted it then put some of my videos into the My Videos folder and now the Video Centre finds them and uses the memory card to save videos downloaded off the net . . That means I’ve got to re-install everything back onto my memory card Maps, Music EVERYTHING . . . . AAGGGHH . . . . :(

Hmmm, might be worth copying everything off the card, formatting, let the phone pick it up and do what it needs to, then copying everything back on again.

Video Centre isn't for stuff taken with the camera or transferred MPEG's it's for streaming content etc.

You'll still have to view the videos through the gallery.

Set your device to data-mode and on the memory card find til folder named "Videocenter" (it's under "Data")

Delete the folder and restart the videocenter app.

Worked for me.

Posted earlier re getting configuration settings, supposed to be sent as a text from voda website, but just not getting it. Now I have noticed that I am not getting textx full stop, got a few but not even getting ones I am sending to myself, which made me notice the problem.

Anyone else noticing such issues?
