View Full Version : [UK] Nokia N95 'GPS data' always 'Waiting for GPS'

I have had access to three Nokia N95 smartphones, all with the latest firmwares O2 and Orange are supplying (meaning Assisted GPS is supported).
Neither the 'GPS data' or 'Maps' applications ever connect to the GPS, even though 3-5 satellites are found.
I always try it outside (and have been in various places) and wait around five minutes.

Even though A-GPS is supported you have to turn it on because it set to OFF by default...
Go to MENU>TOOLS>SETTINGS>GENERAL>POSITIONING>POSITIONING METHODS>
Make sure "Assisted GPS" is ticked.
Then go to MENU>TOOLS>SETTINGS>GENERAL>POSITIONING>POSITIONING SERVER>
Access Point should be your default GPRS data access point
Server Address should be supl.nokia.com
A-GPS is self-learning to a degree, so you should find that after using it a couple of times the GPS lock times come down to just a few seconds :D

A-GPS has always been enabled on the phones by default :S

I dont know about your other n95s but Orange n95s do not have the asssisted gps function. I have an orange n95 and it is not on v12 - so the assisted GPS will not be available. (The only reason iv not done a generic reflash to get v12 is that i will lose line 2 functionality).
nokia maps needs to initially get 4 locks (bar goes black) before it will calculate gps location. once it has 4 locks it will get by ok on 3. make sure ur not mistaking a lock (black bar) with a sat detected (empty bar)

If your getting 3-5 satellites then it's just a matter of time before you get a lock.
Make sure you have clear view of the sky. A cloudy day for example can take much longer to get a fix. Make sure you're not close to buildings, trees etc. Also make sure you open your keypad and try to stay still at one point. Moving and trying to get a fix will take MUCH longer.
If you're on older firmwares i.e. not v12 then turn power save time to at least 15 minutes. You can change this back later. Your first fix can take up to 10 minutes although unusual. The thing is once you get your first fix subsequent fixes is a whole lot quicker.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice Tony - although my AGPS was turned on, when I checked the setting for my 'Access Point' for the 'Positioning Server' it was 'not defined' - hence my positioning was still slow.
It is now MUCH quicker immediately after I fixed this - 30 seconds - lovely!
Tip-top top tip! :)

I can choose between O2 MMS, O2 Mobile Web, O2 Postpay MMS, O2 Postpay WAP, O2 WAP GPRS, O2 GPRS Streaming and WAP.
I am guessing I choose O2 WAP GPRS?

Nope, can't be that, still getting the same problem.

How much does it cost to use GPS with O2? I'm on PAYG btw.

AGPS can use a few kb's of data to help obtain a fix.
Works out in the pennies for several uses...
Example 3kbs x 100 uses = 300kbs
I'm not sure what o2 payg charges per MB but as you can see it won't amount to much. Also note satellite assisted data doesn't have to be updated on every use.
Just make sure you have the maps on your phone via maploader otherwise data charges will get out of hand.
I really wouldn't worry about the cost but you can try using agps a few times and then check your balance.
