View Full Version : N95 8GB Slider Problem?

Hey guys I've had the 8GB N95 for a week now and it is amazing. But it seems the slider has loosened. When the n95 is in the "closed" position there is a 1 mm of give between the top and the bottom. When pressing the keys it makes a little creaking noise. It kind of makes the keys feel unstable, and when I pay for an 800$ phone I'd like to have the phone feel a little more stable.
Are any of you guys experiencing this problem? Should I return it and get a new one or are they all loose like that? Are there any easy fixes for this problem?
I appreciate your input greatly!

did you say a creaking slider on an N95? That's unusual, they're usually so well made.

I must have been one of the lucky ones then. Both my 95s were ok in the slider dept, and my new 8gb is absolutly perfect. From a purely personal point of view you understand.

hey there,
yup! I have the same issue with mine. I have posted/ranted about it a bit but have decided to just put up with it as it would appear to be quite common.
Personally I feel that returning mine (mail order) might result in me getting the same or worse back! mine works perfectly aside from this issue afterall.
MunkiMatt (frequent poster here) mentioned to me that his got loser over time. Mine has had play in it since the day I got it but it does not seem to have gotten any worse.
Do you think yours has worsened?
(edited)
Sorry just re-read your post - the movement I refer to is NOT the same as the issues with the original N95 (wobbly slider) I am referring to a certain amount of "play" in the slider back and forward from portrait and landscape mode... is that what you meant?

Hi,
I got an N95 8GB on Saturday and mine has this same issue, a tiny bit of play in the "up and down" direction on the slider. Seems like it must be a pretty normal thing and mine's done it from new.
I think the phone shop might get annoyed if I made them unbox every phone to try them all, although I think one person on this forum did!
Chances are that it'll end up being the same eventually anyway as the phone gets used.

Yeah I agree on this - as Matt said his loosened off over time...
For me its the *only* fault on the phone (so far) and as you say another one will likely be the same - and knowing my luck have a different issue too! :-)

Here's my first post--I'm a new kid.
About the wobble-wiggle-moving thing.
Mine has the slightest, slightest movement when I apply pressure up or down, but none from side to side. But since there's been so much talk and fuss about it, I've made a small video of it so you all can tell me if mine is a wobble, a little wiggle, or normal movement, which is what I suspect.
Click here (http://s223.photobucket.com/albums/dd305/therever/?action=view¤t=n95-2Slider.flv) to for the short video, and then come back and tell me what you think. You'll just barely be able to hear a slight clicking sound. . .you'll see what I mean.

Hi thanks for your responses, my problem is in the vertical motion of the phone.
So when the phone is placed flat on a table, when I am pressing down on the keys when the phone is in the closed position (not showing the music controls or the number pad) there is 1 MM of movement, the creaking is the result of the top layer(the screen) stressing while it meets the bottom layer (the keypad).
I am returning the phone today via mail, i will post on how the replacement is!
I figure its worth a try, and if the new one is the same way then i'll be fine with it, just a peace of mind kind of thing.

bah! i notice that if i open the phone to portrait mode then hold it so the slider is unhindered - i can feel the slider move a bit when i turn the phone upside down and back...
i read someone claimed to have tightned theirs but neglected to mention how :-/
really am toying with the idea of going into phones4u and testing out other ones so i can find out if the majority are like this rather than rma mine (mail order) it only to get the same back... any phones4u/voda employees comment on the issue?
To Upside: how "loose" do u find yours exactly?

hey! nice video - not an action packed blockbuster but definately highlights the issue though one thing I noticed you did not try and wobble it when in the open portrait position as I experience it there too.
a good test is to hold the phone by the base and shake it back and forward a bit - mine wobbles (or wibbles) even if I do that.

Hi mate, yeah I have finally decided this morning to do the same - after noticing last night that my slider wobbles when I simply shake the phone (gently) I gave in and called for a replacement. as you say - peace of mind.
I was going to put up with it but if it wobbles even when shaken slightly.... well I am just not convinced it wont fall off eventually in my pocket!
What a shame - oh well back to my sony-erricson t250i backup phone for a while I guess!!

Hi Gavin,
How did you go abotu doing this? Can you not just go back into Phones 4 u and ask to swap them over? or is it a case of sending it off to Nokia and waiting a few months?!
Don't really want to do the latter, as I too would be worried of getting an inferior phone, being that the only issue is the slight wobble - which seems to be an "expected" feature anyway. However if I could go into the shop and "pick" my own phone to get a nice tight slider, then I'd be more willing to have a go, despite probably annoying all the staff in the store.
With regards to returning the phone to Nokia, I think I'd rather not. I can imagine being phoneless for weeks, then getting one equally bad back, or perhaps one that's worse! Not sure its worth the hassle, though I might "sit tight" (excuse the pun) and see how successful your efforts are.
Good luck!
FYI I've not noticed my phone having any movement down into the phone when I push buttons, mine just moves a tiny bit in the direction of the slide, both when closed and open.

Heya - well I got mine from play.com and they will exchange it, although parcel force first picks it up so probably the round trip time will be over a week :-(
I WAS happy enough to live with the problem until last night when I noticed that simply shaking the phone gently causes the slider wobble. I think this is worse than what most people have described. Check out The Rever's video (in this thread).
I will be the first to admit I am *extremely* picky about this sort of thing. And I am indeed worried about getting something worse back. You are in a better position here though since you can go into the shop and "try before you buy" - *IF* the issue bothers you enough.
Personally, now that I noticed the slider moving when I simple turn the phone upside down and back (with the slider open) I feel that it is not going to last long unless I am very careful - and on a friday night in the pub I am anything but careful!
My friend has an old-school LG chocolate which is almost 18 months old - and the slider on that is rock solid - I paid £500 for the m95 8gb and this outlay definately contributes to my perfectionist requirements. If I had just got it on contract then I would not be nearly as bothered I suspect.
as Superwario said "I figure its worth a try, and if the new one is the same way then i'll be fine with it, just a peace of mind kind of thing".

I have a small amount of play in my handset but I don't have the same why I try this - maybe it is just your handset in this case.

yeah - mine has just been sent off to get replaced.
I realised after watching the video (in this thread) made by a forum member that mine was probably a little worse than "normal". (if you can call a wobbly silder normal in a £500 phone  )
It seems a bit of movement is common to most sets but mine definately felt (and sounded) looser than average. I dont doubt that they will all loosen off after time but I would prefer to at least start with something a bit more solid!

Gavin, please post back once you receive your new handset - I'll be interested to see what your new one is like.
Mine's not enough to annoy me much, especially in comparison to the 5,000 calls I get from mobile phone insurance companies every day at the moment... blood sucking scum...

Happy days!
I was in a 24 month contract with Vodafone. I sent an N95 8GB back because of reception problems. I received the new one today and it has slider problems.
So I just phoned them to send it back again. They said that every N95 will slowly loosen up and the slider will start to "knock", and that any that are loose from new will not get any worse, only the tight ones will loosen to be the same.
And so, instead of swapping the phone again, they offered to drop my contract down to 18 months! Happy days! New phone 6 months earlier!

Although I agree the slider isn't perfect and has a slight give up/down it is no where near as bad as the n95 classic where it wobbles in all directions giving you a double press on the buttons.
Funny though Nokia can't make perfect sliders because most other companies seems to do them perfectly like SE, Samsung etc. They should dismantle their units and look how it is properly done.

The problem on the N95 models is probably exacerbated by the dual slider?

Yeah agreed but given the resources Nokia have to hand surely such an engineering feat would be within their grasp?
Bah, I love the features so much - but for me a solid, quality feel is important to.
I mentioned in another post (rant) about a sony ericsson I was playing with (think its the walkman phone) and the build on that was astoundingly good. Granted, its only a single direction slider...
I am sending mine back (again) this time for a refund. I might buy another one but only if I can fiddle with it in the shop first. It just seems that the quality with the N95 varies substantially from one handset to another and frankly I am sick of the hassle :cross-eye

Sadly it's not the case because my friends Nokia with one way slider. I can't remember the model number but is also wobbly.

hi all again,
well after looking around I could not find a phone as fully featured as the N95 (8gb). So I caved in and ordered another one...got it today and lo and behold the slider is not nearly was wobbly as the other ones I had. Now I know it will loosen off eventually but this one actually feels like it wont explode in my pocket at least.
I find it shocking that the quality can vary from handset to handset so much. On the other hand there is simply no phone out there with the same range of features so I guess its an (expensive) tradeoff!
Anyway, 3rd handset seems OK so far.... will see how it holds up!
Here is a fix I saw a while ago but beware it is not for the squeamish (N95 in bits):
http://www.simplysymbian.com/2007/05/02/how-to-repair-wobbly-slider-nokia-n95/
My worry is that once the seal of the tape that holds the screen on is broken it will not stick as well again! As it says at the start of the fix.....
DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!
I have a similar fault but will live with it for now.

Hi I got the phone from a nokia store. I have slight slide problems like what have been defined above. Primarily, I believe, it is the lack of robustness in the slide mechanism of this phone. I have called the store and I will probably arrange a swap. However, I am getting the impression that the phone is built with this weakness.
Please provide more info if anyone has an N95-2 that has extremely robust slider like that of Sony's and Samsung's.
I will surely provide my feedback upon a possible swap.

I *eventually* got one on which the slider was "pretty good" i.e. very little movement. That said however, it certainly does not have the quality of (for example) my mates sony ericsson slider phone which felt rock SOLID. I guess the dual slider mechanism is to blame.

Hmm they will definately change it for you but you might have to go via the online store though (i.e. post). Worth calling a 3 store and asking however first....

Just to let you know, I have spoken to 3 and I can swap it at a CPW which is also a "Nokia Club Centre" or something like that. The thing is I am not so sure the replacement will be any better. In fact, I am beginnig to convince myself that my curent one is not that bad. The rattling is very annoying though when using slider buttons with the slider open.
