if you've downloaded the maps then it shouldn't be a problem preventing internet access. I've downloaded the maps and mine still tries to connect, but as my internet is paid for i don't mind. I've tried it in Germany whilst disabling internet access and not had any problem as long as the maps are on the phone/card.
What I did on my N95 was to go into the GPS settings an switch off all the connection settings except the internal GPS and the bluetooth connection.
Also when you run nokia maps if you go into the menu and select setting there is a option where you can turn off the use of the network.
thanks pav, could you point the way for these settings as i really dont know what im doing!! i have all these new-fangled gadgets but cant use half of them:)
Select menu / then tools / then settings / then general / scroll down to positioning and select this option / then positioning methods / then scroll to the options you want to select or de-select / then press the joystick central button to make your selection.
In Nokia maps select L/h soft key under options / then scroll to settings / then network / then use network / you will then have two options never or when needed.
If you select when needed this brings up another option where you can select your default access point.
As I don't have a data plan and I don't know how much or if any data is used using agps, after I made the first connection I switched the use network option to never.

Using GPS without a network connection is slow in my experience. The chipset in the N95 isnt that powerful or up to date, so it can take a loooonngg time to calcualte its initial position, if you try and do this when moving its even worse.
Assisted GPS helps massivley, although if you have a decent data plan I prefer the new google maps

Once you have the maps on the phone, AGPS doesn't use much data if at all. On my n95 8GB'er it has a data indicator now showing how much data is being transferred. It will only use max of a few kilobytes unless you're going where you shouldn't be going and it has to download the map.
