Three state 'Skype lets you call - or chat' with the new Skype phone my question is, is there any plan to enable existing Three Skype customers using other handsets, eg Nokie E65 the ability to IM via Skype as well?
Has anyone asked Three the question yet?

I believe I read somewhere on one of 3's sites that Skype chat will be available to other non-3skypephones by the end of the year.

I suspect and hope this should be supported soon because iskoot, the software which three rebrand, can be currently downloaded and supports this feature from the iskoot website.
Warning: this variant of the software does not benefit from the three integration, ie, making calls isnt free, receiving calls comes from your skypeout, and chat and synchronisation stuff uses up your data allowance :)
