does anyone know if there is a free codec for RealPlayer or an alternative free Video player for the N95 that supports h.264 encoded MKV video files ?
Thanks

You could try Coreplayer.
Just to jump on this on a total hijack, how can you convert these on a PC too? I've tried Super, but it gives an error message.

The important word in my first post is "free" therefore that rules out Coreplayer - any other suggestions ?
Regards your comment about converting using Super, would I be stating the obvious by saying 'make sure you have the appropriate MKV codec installed'? :)

Ah yes, the use of the word free... Missed that one. Apart from Coreplayer, you'd be kind of stuck methinks.
And you wouldn't be stating the obvious, as I wouldn't know which codec was needed. I'm good on computers me.

Matt, this Nokia product looks like it would do the conversion you need (found it on a Spanish(I think) Nokia site when Googling for N95+MKV). It states it does a conversion to N95 from any of the following;
Supported formats:
avi, 3gp, mov, mpeg, mpg, mjpeg, mp4, mg2, mve, m4v, mkv, flv, smk, str, vob, rm, fli, flc, wve, uv2, wmv, 3g2, asf, m4a

I'm still looking for a free MKV player for N95 though !

Well got fed up searching for a get-around to Coreplayer and so forked out £18 quid for the download - Went immediatly to play some video's - must say quality is excellent and lipsync etc spot on - plays Divx and MKV's straight away. I must say,my first impressions of CorePlayer are very good - seems very comprehensive.
I am now basking in lovely hi-def movieness, very nice :)
EDIT The vids I played did not have to be recoded to play on the N95 - this is exactly what I was looking for as I don't have the time or inclination to re-code my video collection for different devices.

You mean the same association that Divx, Xvid etc would have ?

Does core player allow you to play any avi/divx movie files on the N95 without recoding and without chaning the aspect?

The only time I have come across that file extension is when I have seen animé for adults. I haven't seen it used anywhere else, it tends to be .avi for mainstream movies.

Not why I use it, but now that you mention it you do see a lot of Japanese titles using mkv. The reason I picked up on it was for the h.264 content - ie higher resolution + lower file size than the other formats.

I mostly see it used for HD encoded TV shows, personally, but if you're on sites that that have a lot of anime filth (hentai I believe?), thats up to you ;)

haha, wasn't me...
yeah i've sampled .MKV before, it's cool because you can bring up subtitles if you wish and other things.

Hello, i have a question i tested coreplayer because i heared that it can play mkv with the h264 codec but as i tested it with Hirugashi no naku no koro ni (mkv file) the video does not function properly the sound and the picture stumbles is thre an alternative codec for n95 ( and i am not asking for a programm on pc to change the codec or container)
