I'll be careful how I answer this...

While it is possible to download a movie to the phone, there is no legal way to do so. As such, the forum really wouldn't want me to be going into it...

Have you got an icon on PC Suite for Multimedia Conversion or is that just on the new version?

The N95 will play video in various formats with no trouble all you have to do is convert the movie on your computer to the right format. Depending on the video in question and where you are, copyright law may make this illegal. Getting the video off the DVD onto your computer also raises legal issues because of the copy protection systems DVD use.

As for the technical issue of what video format the phone can play, it comes down to MPEG-4 and realvideo. Although it's not that simple! There are resolution, bitrate and codec limitations (some early RealVideo files I have don't play neither do large resolution files and high complexity h264 files) Trial and error is the best way to find a format that suits your needs and plays well (try encoding say a 30 second clip in different formats to get an idea of how well they work)

I tend to use Quicktime pro to convert videos (it's quick and easy and I can quickly crop the video first if I need to) H.246 (limit to baseline only) QVGA 256kbps with 96kbps AAC-LC audio works just fine and gets a 2 hours into about 250mb at very good quality. If you want to display the movie on the TV out I would up the resolution to VGA and the bitrate as well, at higher resolutions the difference between bog standard MPEG-4 and H246 is minimal but the encoding time is much longer for h246 also the phone should be able to play higher bitrates of MPEG-4 because it's less CPU intensive to decode.

There are all in one solutions that you can buy which will do all the encoding (and sometimes DVD ripping) for you, some even use different formats like DivX and have custom playback apps for your phone. There is also a DivX player app but I haven't found it to be any better then the built in RealPlayer.

You can also buy coreplayer which will allow you to play many movies natively without conversion. I play tons of DivX/xVid movies without conversion... All legitimate videos of course. ;)
