I'm not sure if I missed it but has anyone made an objective comparison of the two? Is it just 20% better due to the larger battery or have they made improvements to the 3G power consumption?
Cheers
J.

I would like to see them tested too. I was thinking the other day and wondered if the 8GB version back housing/cover will fit on a classic n95. That would allow those of us who are stuck in long contracts :( to upgrade the battery.

Review claims 'This would appear to give 25% extra battery life, but in fact extra optimisations in the OS (and possibly the use of demand paging) mean that the real world increase is closer to 50%.' That's not really a detailed test though.

battery is bigger, but will more RAM on the phone not mean that it will prob b around same, especially if that extra RAm being used

Reviews seem to suggest that the battery life has increased, although it's hard to say exactly how much. The RAM isn't really a huge power sink though compared to other phone components - doubling the RAM will require more power, but doesn't suck up all the additional power available.

Thats a pretty nonsensical argument, how did you draw that conclusion!? At any rate the N95 8Gb unquestionably has a better battery life than the N95. Demand paging n the 8Gb supposedly helps too.:)

Personally there is a difference, but not big enough.

Can you expand on what you mean about this, please?

Well before I could easily go through the whole fully charged battery from 9AM to 12:030PM. Now it last through to about 2PM.

Is that for the N95GB or vanilla?
Are you saying that the difference in battery life between the two isn't big enough?
Sorry, brain cells not up to speed today :D

Sorry, I'm being very vague today!
I'm talking about the 8GB. With my previous N95, I'd only last through to lunchtime. For a power user, the battery is still nowhere near good enough.

Really? That was one of the reasons I was holding out for the 8GB. How much use are you getting out of a charge on it?

From 9Am to mind afternoon maybe? But I use my phone more than 99% of people. I run Maps all the time (sales rep), I pick up my e-mails probably 10 times a day, a good amount of calls and texts.
For a standqard user, the battery will probably make a good difference.

OK, so is it worth waiting to January for the 8GB to come out on 3, rather than get the original N95 now then? Is the 8Gb that much better?
My usage is normally an hour of calls a day, 10-20 texts and about an hour on the internet. I have the N73 currently and have to charge that every night, so am used to poor battery life!

Oh yeah, wait till January! It's agreat phone. With that kind of usage, you'll be fine with the upgraded battery.

The guy in the Three store yesterday was very confident that Three will be getting the 8gig N95 next month, ie Dec 07. I recall the run around I had waiting for the N95, so I'm not believing much into it, but he seemed to really believe in it. I guess if the software issues were ironed out in the release of the N95 original then it could be possible. I'm not really sure what the exclusive rights are to Voda.
Oh and the Three store guy said that no restrictions on the firmware. What do you all think?

i think he wouldn't have a clue until the handset is actually in his hand.
Any software issues between in the original N95 are not relevant when discussing the 8GB version. it's two different firmwares.

I'm so far very unimpressed by the N95 8gb's battery life. I run Bluetooth, Blacklist and Fring and got from 11am till 6.45pm, then the battery died. This is the improved model; I feel for the N95 original sufferers!
I love the N95 8gb phone nonetheless, but will be keeping my SE w850i for important occasions like mountain climbing where a flat battery just won't do.

Or you could buy a spare battery and keep it with you for those times...

Thats what I do, spare battery with me all the time (both fully charged over night on a desktop stand) and when in the car I slap it onto the charger.
Now that the vanilla N95 has demand paging too I never have any issues at all.
The only advantage of the 8gig, from what I can see is its bigger screen as the vanilla can have more memory than it with a card shoved in.

Someone told me the new battery on the n95 8 gig doesn't have a 'memory' so you can charge it at whatever bar-level i.e it will still have the same battery life (durability) etc?!
Or if you didn't understand what I wrote there, what is the recommended way to charge the n95 8 gig battery?
Wait to last bar, nightly, anytime etc?

None of the modern Nokia batteries have a memory issue (inc the original N95s). In fact it's better to keep them topped up!

So where does the N95 go wrong campared with an N81 8GB.
I used to use my N95 on a typical day with 3G turned off, listen to about an hour of music, 1/2 an hour gaming, a couple of calls and a few texts and my battery would just about make 6pm after being charged all night.
My N81 i used the music player for 6 hours solid, a couple of calls, a few texts and a bit of gaming and at 11pm that night i had only lost one bar and i still have 3G switched on.
Apart from the fact the N81 has a 2 megapixel camera compared to a 5 i really cant see much difference in the phones.
So where has the N95 gone so wrong?

first off what games are keeping your attention for 30mins?! care to share where to get some free games etc?
secondly i'm using the n95 8 gig and the battery life has been decent to me, though my expectancy has been lowered because of reading ppl's reviews etc.
this is a crass summarisation but on an average day i do about 1-2 hours music on and off, a couple of short calls (less than 5 mins), browse the gallery every now and again, maybe surf the net for a bit (no more than 20 min in each session) and probably send about 10-30 texts.
it lasts for the 8-12 hour day sufficiently. hm maybe i'll need to push it more next time.

Well I'm no expert but it's just what I've read on various forums and web sites about lithium-ion batteries.

My brother just upgraded To A N95 8gb and he said the battery life about an extra 2-3 hours .

My N95 (original) lasts between 1 to 2.5 days, depending on use.
I don't use maps, music or anything of the sort, but I do have a SIP connection switched on virtually all the time I'm out of the house, for incoming VoIP calls.
I do a moderate amount of 3G talking, from 5 to 30 minutes. But what takes it out of the battery is VoIP. If I get to talk on VoIP at all, the battery will last a day or so, otherwise on standby with only 3G talking it lasts up to 2 to 3 days.
