Add a touch of iPhone to your Nokia N95… This app uses the N95’s built-in level sensor to change the display lay-out from portrait to landscape and vice versa.

Check here to find out how!

Funny man.

"What this app does is alternating the orientation from portrait to landscape with the press of a key. I had it in my old N80 and it was very useful. However, in N95 it is pretty useless, as you can do the same thing by sliding the keypad to the opposite way."

:D

The level sensor built in to the N95 is used for the camera. Take a vertical photo and you will find it is the right way up when you load it on your pc. Very handy and awfully nice of Nokia. ;)

It's worth trying out the MovingBall demo from this page:
http://research.nokia.com/projects/activity_monitor

You don't need to install the SDK, just the 6kb demo. I knew the N95 could detect orientation, but I didn't know it had a 3D accelerometer.. I'm impressed. It immediately makes me think of those handheld games where you have to move a ball around a maze.

I don't *Think* MovingBall uses the same technology - doesn't it use the N95's camera to 'sense' movement?

Try it, the lens cover of the camera can be shut and it works. It uses the in built accelerometer which detects movement along x, y and z axes. Also have a gander at the Nokia wiki for the sensor and links within for more info :)

Good lord - that moving ball thing has been the scientific breakthrough of the afternoon, demoing it in the office has brought yelps of disbelief.

I wonder why the N95 has a motion sensor? I mean, it's not really used in the current application set.

Lets see some Wii-influenced games now!

Very well actually.

Could be a bit more sensitive (when you hold the phone in a less than 45 degree angle in front of you it doesn't register when you rotate) You need to hold it more upright.

But this is the first beta, and apart from the sensitivity it's working perfectly.

REALLY useful and I urge anyone interested to donate and support the developer - this will be a must have app.

Matt,

How did you download this after you donated?
Did you recieve an email?
I'd really like to test this out as it appears really useful, so long as it's not to heavy going on the processing speeds...

The website http://www.bysamir.fr/rotateme/ quotes that:

'All donators will receive all new beta releases during this month until the public release.'

and;

'An unsigned version of rotateMe 2.0 will be out toward the end of November.'

Not that you'll recieve it immediately.

Did you?

Thanks,
Chris

I have recieved an e-mail instructing me to sign the unsigned application (using a drawn-out process of registering a non-public domain email address!) at symbiansigned.com, then following a long set of progamming instructions...
It all looks like a pain in the proverbial.

Do you have experience of this as I can't open the .exe file (DevCertRequest_30_10_2006_v2.0.exe ) which I have downloaded directly from the link in the tutorial? I'm frustated already!

Hi Biggzy,
A big ask I know: but if you don't ask...
Is there any chance that you would be able to obtain the 'DevCert' from Symbian Signed for me and sign it?

I can't register with Symbian Signed due to them not accepting Hotmail/Yahoo addresses and would probably mess it up anyway...

If so let me know and I'll send you the relevant IMEI number and attach the sultan.key that I recieved from Samir Oueldi.

I'd really appreciate the help, from anyone that could lend a hand.

Lovely! :D

I agree with an earlier post - at the moment, the handset has to be held near to 90 (in the z-axis?) for it to register the movement. I'm sure this will be adjusted in later releases.
Other than that, the app. seems good. Can't judge battery life effects yet - though as it's not doing anything while the handset is locked I assume it can't consume much power..

I don't think it's gimikey (SP), i think it's massively useful. I always used to use rotate me on my N80, the screen is so much nicer widescreen for movies, and internet browsing.

I agree about the slight problem with the phone being vertical to get it to register a movement, but i quite like flicking my phone to make it register, kinda feels like i'm doing something :D

Loving this program, it's genius!

Not really. these people are taking one element of the iPhone. We're not replacing our camera with 2mpx flashless non video recording ones are we? Nor are we crippling our Bluetooth. Or creating a closed system so that the only way we can install an app is to hack the firmware. I could go on?

I've already uninstalled this. Drove me mad.

I cannot think of any other feature which I would want from the iPhone, other than the touch-screen, however I can certainly live with using a regular keypad; and owning a superb unit (with a decent camera, Wi-fi, Bluetooth and GPS) instead of a fashion item which really doesn't cut the mustard...
Can't help but imagine I'd be disappointed with the iPhone.
I'd take an N95 (8Gb preferably!) over the iPhone, any day.

Agreed.
It’s like Apples roll out of the under performing iPhone.
Everyone knows that the proper release "may" go some way to catch up on the N95’s lead. They will have to include features that come as standard on most mid priced phones nowadays.
The present “rushed/beta/crippled/trial/mid range” iPhone is just Apples small effort of dipping its feet in to Nokia’s very big pond. :)

Less we forget Nokia's ROOTS!

What is known today as Nokia was established in 1865 as a wood-pulp mill by Knut Fredrik Idestam on the banks of the Tammerkoski rapids in the town of Tampere, in south-western Finland. The company was later relocated to Nokia by the Nokianvirta river, which had better resources for hydropower production. That's where the company also got its name that is still used today. The name of the Nokia originated from the river which flowed through the town. The river itself, Nokianvirta, was named after the old Finnish word originally meaning a dark, furry animal that was locally known as the nokia, or sable, later pine marten.

Finnish Rubber Works established its factories in the beginning of 20th century nearby and began using Nokia as its brand. Shortly after World War I Finnish Rubber Works acquired Nokia Wood Mills as well as Finnish Cable Works, a producer of telephone and telegraph cables. All these three companies were merged into the Nokia Corporation in 1967.

And you’re above very informative but totally pointless and off topic spiel has what pray tell to do with the topic?

Just because you found nothing wrong with my observations on the iPhone and probably agreed with them gives you no reason to totally ignore all of my post "and the thread topic" and only reply with a second rate history lesson of useless information. :D

I can only guess that you must be an aficionado of one or more of the following sites:
http://home.nycap.rr.com/useless
http://www.singlegrain.com/blog/301-useless-facts
http://www.amusingfacts.com :D

I think you would be far better reading the posting rules of the site though.
3G Forum Codes Of Conduct POSTING RULES

P6) Members are asked to keep threads on topic. If the trail of discussion diverts from its original subject, then start a new thread. A warning will be issued for a 1st offence with the possibility of a ban for a 2nd offence.

Hope this helps you. :p

You're dismissing someone due to their post count?

i have donated but still not recieved a link. How long have you all had to wait. I sell phones and would love to show this off. So people can see the N95 still has some tricks left up its sleeve.

Just realised that the version I recieved a few days ago was the V2 app - silly me, waiting for a follow-up email advising me of the update! :p
Here's to the next update... more use of the N95's accelerometer please Nokia (or Samir...)!

If I posted nothing but rubbish and off topic posts my post count would be over 700 like some members on here, know what I mean @marlin026? ;)

Its quality and not quantity that counts on here, hence the reason my meagre 33 posts have gained me a better rep than your 749 ;)

Keep trying though and you will get better :D

Didn't have to wait more than a few minutes as long as I can remember...
Maybe wait overnight before contacting him?

Trying to follow the instructions to sign the certificate but can't install the DervCertRequest tool, when I try and open it nothing happens! Any suggestions, what am I doing wrong?

I had the same problem with V2.0, it just won't install and 2.2 from symbiansigned.com doesn't have the private key option. You can grab a copy of 2.1 from http://developer.symbian.com/main/tools/devtools/distribute/ that should do the trick.
