Now i know the iPhone isnt a 3G phone and its against the t&c on 3 but im waiting for delivery of my new iPhone and ive got 30 days left on my 3 contract before i move onto o2 payg as im moving abroad Jan 3rd.

Ive read in some places that some people dont have any issues using the 3 sim in the phone until 3 block it. Other people put the sim in and it just wont register.

Is there any way to know for sure if my 3 sim will work or not in the iPhone. It is unlocked.

Cheers
Chris

I tried my 3 sim in my sister's iPhone this weekend - it didn't work. The iPhone came up with an error message essentially saying it wouldn't work (off the top of my head I can't remember what, maybe "invalid" or some such word.) Of course, 3's sims are USIMs which I believe are a little be different to vanilla SIMs

FWIW her phone is an unlocked AT&T one and her Vodafone UK sim work's fine (well as fine as it can on *THAT* phone and with the poor Vodafone reception at our parents' house!)

I took my 3 sim out and put it back in again and both times it came up with the error. I didn't want to keep trying as I didn't want to knacker a £500 phone that didn't belong to me!

I just figured it was an incompatibilty with USIMs. The phone is, IMHO, a huge disappointment. Being only 2G is worse than I imagined. Checking out YouTube is amazing - but only when in a wifi hotspot. When you've got wifi you see what the phone can really do, and could do, had it been 3G.

Is it a PAYG or a contract? My sim is 4 or 5 years old...could that make a difference?

Hmm, interesting! I tried my contract SIM as that's what I had with me at the time and it's the one with "unlimited" internet. I'll have to try a 3toGo one the next time my sister's around. Don't have any proper PAYG ones anymore - 3 actually cut those off if they're not activated within a set time.

My sim is about 4 years old from 03/03/03 and was on 3togo tariff

Guy in my work got a iPhone when he was on holiday in Florida for $400 (~£200) and has it running on O2 PAYG after unlocking it, but tried my 3 sim in it and it didn't work either.

Kid, we know! From what I can tell everyone in this thread that has one has an unlocked one - it's the SIMs (some of them) that aren't working.

My sister's iPhone works fine with a Vodafone UK contract SIM but will not recognise my 3 UK contract SIM. So, quite clearly the phone is unlocked and just doesn't like some SIMs! ;o)

Surely, if the iphone doesn't support 3g because apple claim that 3g makes battery life too short, then it cant work on 3g. Mine doesn't work anyway.

I expect there will be a 3g iphone next year - and that WILL be worth having especially if it can use the turbo version which 3 are rolling out.

Then o2 can go away and think what might have been!

Hi

I understand that 3 PAYG simcards cam work on 2 & 2.5g phones.

I had a Nokia 6300 which is not a 3G handset, and my 3 contract sim which is a year old worked fine and my wifes 3 sim which is 3 weeks old did not.

Older 3 PAYG usims were both 2G & 3G contract ones and new PAYG ones are 3G only so only the older 'we pay' ones will work in an unlocked iphone

King

ps. Get a Viewty instead, smashes the iphone to bits

Hi fellas, with the expected announcement of the 3G apple iPhone in the next 60 days do you think that my 3 contract sim card will work in it or not?

I know it's an odd question, seeing as it isn't even out yet of course but in theory should it work fine or is it down to 3 not using the right SIM cards.

Presume that the vodafone and Orange SIM's that people are using are still 3G enabled and they are working fine so i'm thinking that it might not.

If that's the case I may go for an iPod touch and keep my phone. My contract runs out in January.

If 3 have any sense thay will make sure that it does work in an unlocked 3G iphone.
They usually want you to buy from them, but in this case they wont be able to sell them as things stand.

They have the best coverage of HSPDA and could do well if they go about it in the correct way. But hold your breath, knowing 3's 'friendly' attitude towards their customers, I doubt it.

im gonna be extremely pissed off and not happy with 3 if the sim cards do not work in the next version of the iphone! i know the 3 sim cards work in any 3g handset at this present time so i would think that its gonna work - losing a customer with 3 contracts if it doesnt work though!! cant wait for the release! was bit let down with the current version because of the internet speeds other than that i was quite happy with it but i use the internet alot on my phone :-s cant wait!!
