I went, was quite good (well for the free beer and food!) I was expecting to a little more from Nokia, a presentation maybe but still it was good to se the new phones and ask a couple of questions to some of the Nokia people.
I spoke to the Nokia Browser guy, he mentioned that they have quite a few iphones in their office, implying that they have their eye on it. I have heard however that the upcoming S60 touch screen phones will not have multi touch - not necessarily the end of the world but would have been nice.
The N95 8Gb is very nice indeed - far snappier menus, quicker web page rendering and navigating. As far as the build, it is a vast improvement over the N95, a very solid slider, the front buttons also feel easier to use and the bigger screen worth it. I didnt check the speed of the camera (I forgot). You have probably heard this before however, I think the difference with this N95 8gb is it was a full production model.

I wasn't very impressed by the 'multi-touch' features of the iPhone, from reviews I've read anyway - the only gesture that involves more than one finger is 'pinching', as far as I can see? It seems like rather a wasted opportunity.
Nokia's touch device looks fairly swish and still has a Nokia feel to it, although text input still worries me - I can't see myself wanting to use a phone without any keypad (and that's after using a PDA without one). Will future devices use both touch input and the keypad, I wonder, or will they keep it segregated?

i unfortunately couldn't make the event.. DAMN WORK!.. did they give away any freebies/phones?
So Chrisp, are you looking to get rid of your n95 for the 8gbn95?

Nokia may as well steer clear of anything approaching the multi-touch screen anyway, since Apple will most likely get someone taking them to court (I think someone has already tried) over it, not to mention Microsoft's own touch tech that they've been pulling out recently.
Of interest is Nokia's 'flip top' or whatever it is patent, where a cover is used so that the user can access specific parts of the screen without having to look - granted this might well turn out to be little more than a plastic/rubber cover with holes in it, but if priced right, would be handy for music controls in a pocket (hmm, starting to see the flaws now - N95, feel for the right button and press it). Multi touch is all well and good, but with the Patent Office in the US giving anyone and the granny a patent, any tech developments are up for grabs.
Microsoft has just been granted a patent for a mobile phone system that Gizmodo says looks like the iPhone (actually, I reckon it looks like just about any file manager). http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/copycats/microsoft-phone-patent-looks-just-like-the-iphone-310295.php
I'm thinking of patenting a tyre that blows out at 56 mph as a safety feature, so that you can't break any speed limits, then suing the US tyre companies for infringement.
Going back to style, have just seen a picture of an iPhone and the N810 next to each other. Twins!

Did you ask about release date/network??
I know there's plenty of rumors going around but I haven't come across anything solid (unless i've missed something?)

Well a Symbian T shirt some mints and a bluetooth headset:p still it was quite a good event.
I really would love the N95 8gb after playing with it, I'd have to get it sim free so Ill see how far the price comes down - also it depends when the next gen phone comes out.
Incidentally who is this guy? - http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q186/Jose_R-A-M/N95%208GB/DSCF5357-1.jpg - He was at the Nokia event, 'thought he knew it all - although I was a little tipsy admitedly!

The Nokia guy said that, this wasnt an issue - regarding multi touch and patents. I suspect however they wont go for multitouch and will try to go for all angles - stylus, touch and maybe keypad - but with a whole range of phones and blitz apple. I also talked to a guy at WomWorld, who said there were some really amazing phones coming out (that he has seen). I know they get their money from Nokia but are supposed to be impartial, however it sounds like an intersting 2008.

he's a top bloke. Good drinker too. Awful dancer though.
Very passionate about this industry. Hell, he moved to Finland.
