Hi -

I've just signed up for prepaid 3, bought a Nokia 6120, and unlocked it by phoning up 3 and paying them £15. So far so good.

I've got net access working at £1/mb normally, and £1/day (subject to fair use) by buying an add-on. This seems to be heavily filtered, though. For example, Skype is preinstalled on the phone, but won't connect.

Am I right in thinking that this "unlimited web browsing" is really just that, and that only HTTP traffic is allowed? If so, is there any way to buy a real internet connection on prepaid? Contracts aren't an option for me.

As a possibly related question, I'm seeing a lot of "enable cookies to proceed" pages directly from 3, even though I have cookies enabled on the phone's browser. It's impossible to get past them. I'm also hitting "invalid jar file" when trying to install apps like Google Mail and Google maps.

Cheers,

Gwyn.

From my experience so far it works for both Vodafone and Virgin on 3g full internet using my phone as a modem to my laptop. But it is a very expensive option for sure. About £2 per mb I think. But if you want to surf just using the phone it is much less as you do not get through so much data usage.

I'm sorry that I can't answer your question, but did you just ring up 3 and asked for an unlock code? Did you have to deposit a specified amount in credit or anything?

I'm asking because I'd like to get hold of an unlocked 6120c as a secondary phone.

Thanks

Unlock codes usually cost something like £15, at least it was when I asked T Mobile for the "subsidy code" for a K610.

I think Orange charge £20, I could be wrong though.
Virgin used to charge £30, but at least you still kept the £30 to spend on calls.

I was looking at a 6120c as an option instead of the USB modem on Broadband Lite but the local Three store said it is not available yet, so I would have to buy it on PAYG.

At least if it is purchased from 3 there should be no problems regarding certificates on Three's network.

Yeah, I realise that I'll have to pay around £20 for an unlocking code, but i don't also want to be held to ransom to say put in something silly like £250 in credit before they'll give you an unlocking code - which I've heard stories about.
