O2 has sharply raised its store targets to meet the massive sales it hopes to achieve from the iPhone, which will be sold in O2, Apple and Carphone Warehouse stores from November.

An O2 source estimated that the operator's average targets for its own stores is 8,500 contracts per week. The new targets will see the company aiming for 11,000. He said: 'The targets are huge this quarter. They are the biggest we have ever had.' Another added: 'They are huge, but they have to think about how huge the iPhone is going to be.' O2 would not confirm the figures or say if the targets would increase.

Each store was given at least one new full-time salesperson as the company went on a 'massive recruitment drive' recently to ensure that there would be enough staff to take on the anticipated new business.
