Hi all,
Im trying to connect my Compaq Ipaq 3870 (running windows mobile) to the Internet using my LGU880 mobile as a modem. I've had it data enabled and subscribed to 3 UK's Broadband Lite add-on, but cant connect to the net on my PDA via bluetooth.
Ive paired the devices so thats fine. What I need is the settings or a step-by-step guide on how to create a connection (ie phone number, extra dial-string modem commands etc). Can I connect via GPRS, or dial-up or some other way?
Can anyone help? Iv looked everywhere and phoned 3 on numerous occasions but cant they dont seem to understand what i'm trying to do.
Many thanks

Hi there Ravos
Here is a good place to look for this kind of info.
http://www.filesaveas.com/gprs.html
Has Three "officially" enabled "modem access" via handsets yet ?
Putting issues regarding "Internet Access through a handset" aside.
Browser ID's, excessive data usage etc
Here goes:
Bluetooth manager
Tap on "New"
Select "Connect"
Selct "Partner with a cellphone"
Tap on "Next"
Leave as "unknown not listed"
Click on "Device window" to choose a phone
Set the phone to "discoverable"
Click and choose the phone
Set a passkey to "pair up" with the phone
Phone will ask to confirm and enter passkey
Select "Yes" and enter the passkey into the phone
Next >Tick as "Default" connection if required.
Next > Finish
In Bluetooth Manager hold down "Phone Dial-up Networking"
Select phone listed, Select Connect or press OK
This is what I did in WM5 and WM2003.
Start > Settings > Connections
My ISP > Add new modem connection
Possibly call it "Three GPRS"
Set select modem to Bluetooth
Set up new partnership or click on the phone already set up
Key in *99***x# where "x" is the CID of the GPRS connection in the phone's data settings profile
(Some people quote *99# as the dial string but *99***x# works for me)
Click on "Next"
Leave "user" and "password" fields blank
Click on "ADVANCED" settings
Set "Baud rate" to 115200
Untick "wait for dial tone"
Set the "Extra dial string" field to this:
+CGDCONT = x, "IP", "put Three's APN here""
(quotation marks as well)
Three's APN might just be "three.co.uk".
Where x is the CID of the GPRS connection in the phone's data settings menu
It's usually set to "1" but it depends on the number of data accounts you have set up.
Leave everything else as is.
Click OK
Click on Finish
FWIW
I always set the "Allow connection" setting in "My devices" to "Always ask" just to be safe.
Use the PDA's "Bluetooth Manager" to make the Bluetooth "Dial-up Networking" connection.
A bit of a slog but I hope it helps.

*99**x# has never worked for me on three even though this is what some software auto sets it at even if your say its for use with 3 but *99# does and this is what i use for my n73 as a bluetooth modem for my n800.

This month's PDA Essentials (Blue cover, Page 15) also has *99# as the dial string required.
BTW
Is *99**x# a typo ?
You really mean *99***x#
FWIW
I use either an HP 2210 or an XDA Mini S to access the internet through Bluetooth with the following unlocked handsets:
SE T630, SE K610 or an Orange SPV C500.
I have never had the opportunity to try this with any Nokia handset.
Possibly one for the future ?

Hi alan yes that was a typo, a did miss a * out. Iv only ever done this with a nokia and it worked fine with each model, think the first i did it with was a 7650, thats going back a few years :-)
Posting this from an n800 connected to an n73 via bluetooth using *99#. Got a recent pda essentials back home but it may be last months as i dont remember an article on connectivety.

Hi
I've got a N800 also, I'm looking at getting a 6120 on 3 with xseries tarrif.
If I paired the phone to the N800 could I connect to internet at HSDPA speeds? If so that would be incredible.
What 3 X Tariff would I need for this?
Cheers

In case you do not know, I am not actually on 3, yet :D
Stezos might be the person to confirm that it is possible to add the "Broadband Lite" 1GByte pack at a tenner a month to a contract phone.
Anything else could leave you open to repercussions.
By that I mean using a handset with the "X Series" addon as a bluetooth modem would probably violate the T's & C's.
Have a hunt around for more posts on this subject

I dont know what the maximum data rate is of bluetooth 2.0 so you may not get the full speed that the 6120 is receiving passed through to your n800 but using the 6120 as a bluetooth modem for the n800 on 3 with one of the broadband packages should work without any problems over HSDPA.

Thanks for the reply Stezos.
Just one thing I can't quite get my head around.
If I go for the broadband lite option, I'm assuming I have to remove SIM from modem and put in phone, this then leaves my phone with no actual phone capablities, is that right?

Just one more thing - how do 3 know if I'm using my phone as a modem to access internet on a tablet?
If I get caught is it a telling off or a disconnect?
Anyone on standard internet tarif done this?
Cheers

Drew there are two different options for mobile broadband. One is to subscribe to a contract with the usb broadband modem, the other is as a broadband addon for a phone, this is the one that you want. So you would sign up to a contract to get the 6120 that you want, then add mobile broadband access as an addon, this starts at £10 a month for 1gig of data. Then you use your phone as a bluetooth modem, so no need to remove sims at all.
Secondly yes it is possible for 3 to see how their data is being used, I dont know the details of how its done but as you know websites can detect what browser and operating system you use, so 3 could do something similar but on a more advanced level.
I have x-series on one of my phones and I do occasionally use it as a modem. There terms and conditions state that it cant be used as a modem for a laptop or computer........ as the n800 is neither then in a way you wouldnt be breaking terms and conditions, whether this would hold up should you be landed with a huge bill i dont know. But on the plus side no one on this forum has ever reported been charged, cut off or had a warning for using x-series as a modem.

I got a 6120 from 3 on Monday, as an upgrade. I don't need all the bells & whistles that the N95 has or the reliability problems! The 6120 is great for my needs if a little on the small size. I'm a big bloke with big hands so texting can be awkward, but otherwise I'm impressed. I haven't got X Series as I really don't need it, although I could be tempted.
I always get a Martin Fields overlay to protect the screen and am also getting a Krusell leather case. I don't really like them as the nylon mounting for the belt clip breaks too easily, but there doesn't seem to be any other case available at the moment.
Anyway, the 6120 is a great little phone and has scored well in independent reviews.
