If you use a 3G phone to act as a modem for a PC, do you get the same download speed as the phone gets directly.

Looking to use a 3G phone to access the internet, without having to get a dedicated pc card.

Cheers,

Simon.

It depends of how you are using it. If via bluetooth speed may be lower. If via usb then ok, but check the port speed settings are set to their highest possible rate.

I use my SPV M700 as a modem via a bluetooth usb conector into my lap top.

On 3G the download speeds are usually 30 to 40 kbps.(similiar speed to the old 56kbps modems).

However every 20 minutes are so, the speed temporarily cuts down to normal G speed. I get really slow slow speeds of about 5 to 10 kpps for about 5 minutes then it goes back up to the 3G speed again.

These speeds are OK for browsing, but you have to be very patient if you want to download anything and the files can't be too large either.

The thing is you can't ring up Orange to complain about the slow speeds because you're only supposed to be using the phone for browsing and to be honest the speeds (althought slow) are just about acceptable for browsing.

I live in Sheffield although my phone is capable of 3.5G speeds (offering broadband speed), I've not been able to get Orange 3.5G in my area.
I understand that Orange will eventually make 3.5G speeds available in most large cities.

Gprs has a connection speed of approx 50-60kbps, and a download speed of approx 7-10kbps (roughly1/8of the connection speed)

3g connects at about 350kbps and has a download speed of approx 40-55kbps.

As said, if you connect using bluetooth it will limit your speed to approx 120kbps, although im not sure if that is of connection speen of download speed.

I's all rather confusing:tired:

Maybe for a PC. But this goes down even further for a PDA. The shame is that in theory this should all work. In practise whern on the move it tends to fail which is most frustrating.

From my experience of using a Nokia N73 as a modem using 3, I connect at 460Kbps, and typical download speeds will be 30-40KBps (240Kbps-320Kbps)

I have just set up my laptop to use my e65 via bluetooth, now whilst it seems to default the download connection to 115200 bps I changed it via properties on XP to 460800 bps. I have completed a speedtest and that shows approx 275 kbps downstream and approx 75-80 kbps upstream which is far faster than a 56k modem is....

Hey how did you change the setting exactly?

If you right click the bluetooth connection in control panel > network connections and under general, select bluetooth modem and select configure, you can then change the connection speed to the maximum.

When I was using my Nokia N70 with Orange 3G I was downloading about 350KB a sec.
