Hi, I am new to this site. I have just bought the new Nokia N95 phone, I want to use the SatNav side of it but I am getting very confused with it all. Just a few questions.
1. How do I set up the maps, I have noticed that everytime I go into this section the phone goes onto the internet.
2. Do you have to pay to use the satnav & is all the sofware etc in the phone to use it, I have seen advertised phones for sale with or without satnav?
3. Does anyone have any instructions or written advice for all this, the nokia handbook seems very confusing.
Thanks for any help. Andy

1. If you go into the maps application, and then zoom in to a certain location, the application will try and download the relevant area via the internet connection. The alternative is to download maps (say, for the whole of the UK) onto your phone from your PC, via the Nokia Maps Loader. Then you won't incur data charges, as long as you are only looking within the areas you have downloaded. It is possible to change the settings in th Nokia maps app to stop it connecting to the internet.
Search this forum or the nokia website for instructions how to do all this.
2. No you don't have to pay for the satnav and all the software should be there. All you would have to pay for is downloading map data over the air as described above. There are some add-on services you pay for, I think, but the basic service is free.
3. Search this forum. Lots of threads about this.

Had a go at downloading the maps last night and got into a right pickle the website made me download software updaters and all sorts of other things, ran out of time in the end and gave up, will try again tonight.
One question, I have carried out searches and read up on the satnav and if correct understand that I can download all the maps I require onto my card, turn off the internet link and use the satnav to plan journeys etc, can I still use the satalites to pin point where I am or do I have to pay for the voice turn by turn facility, still a bit confused.
Also, if I decide to go for the full turn by turn sat nav, can anyone advise either to stay with nokia and pay for their software or is their any other good sofware I could use, thing is I don't travel a lot so would not use it on a day to day basis prob now and then so don't want to have to pay a hefty charge for something not being used. Any advice would be great.

If you turn off the internet link then yes you can still use the satellites to get your location. The only thing I'm not sure about is whether using the A-GPS setting (it uses phone network info to help the GPS find your location) will still work, or whether, if you are using this abroad for example, whether you will incur data charges.
As I understand it if you want the voice guided turn-by-turn system you have to pay for it as an extra. I've got a feeling it may have been free on earlier versions of Nokia Maps (maybe check which version you've got) but I'm not sure about this.

if you're going to use it very rarely, then stick with the Nokia option. You could for example just decide to activate it for a week, which costs around five quid. When you buy the licence you are given the payment options so work out which is best for you.

Hi, me again. I have been in to settings and turned off the use network setting and all is working ok. I can view the UK so assume it has already been installed into the phone.
Where in the phone is the map stored, I know its not on the card cos its a new card, so what I want to do if possible is have a section on the card and have all the maps on it, does anyone know how to do this?
On the issue of maps, where and how is the best way to download them, I have read there are two ways, using Nokia maploader and getting them direct from Nokia. The other was to go to the Smart2go site and use their software (I believe Nokia own them anyway), is there any difference between them or proference?
On a different note, last night I loaded the Nokia PC Suite on my PC and started to set up my phone with my music etc. The only problem I found was using this to transfer the music files PC Suite wanted to convert the files to M4a files and took a bit of time to do. My old phone was a sony Ericsson and with this all I had to do is drag and drop the MP3 file onto the card. Question is can this be done with the Nokia or do they have to be converted using the PC Suite. Is there a quick and easy way of keeping the phone and software up to date..
Sorry if by now you have dropped off to sleep or given up the will to live but I want to make sure the phone is set up correctly. Thanks.

Hi,
Where in the phone is the map stored ...
On the memory card. The application sorts the folder structure out.
On the issue of maps, where and how is the best way to download them, I have read there are two ways, using Nokia maploader ...
Use Maploader. Can't help with the music question, sorry.

Use the software updater built into PC Suite.
