Iphone Unlocking

Does anyone know if an unlocked Iphone would work on the 3 network? I've heard that it will and it won't, mainly due to 3 using UTMS and the Iphone using GSM, but that the 2 are compatible.

Can anyone confirm either way?

as you said, because of the different network frequencies it wont work. Three's sim cards are programmed not to work on gsm phones.
