Am thinking of getting a spare battery for my N95 when I am travelling.

Looking on ebay, most of what is for sale doesn't seem to be Nokia-manufactured. The genuine Nokia ones seem to cost about twice as much. Anyone know whether it's worth shelling out for the Nokia ones or will the copies work just as well?

Be careful that what is sold as genuine nokia *is* in fact genuine nokia.. there's a lot of knockoffs on ebay.

TBH I'd stick to something like Amazon rather than risk it.

Goes without saying... buy genuine!

Unoriginal batteries have 50% the standby time of the original. On the N95 this means that there is no way an unoriginal battery will last all day.

And yes, there's a lot of frauds on eBay. Check the sellers NEGATIVE feedback before buying. Not that many buyers ever discover they have been had, but a few does. Sellers like nooreen30 make a big business out of selling unoriginal batteries looking genuine, but it's still the same cheap crap, only fitted with a fake hologram.

If in doubt wether your battery is genuine, scratch the black bar on the hologram to reveal the production number. If there is no number underneath, you've been had!

apart from the lack of battery life, one of the other issues is that non-genuine have been known to explode!

Ok. Thanks for replies. Sounds like I should stick to Nokia.

Just I thought maybe there were some reputable manufacturers who made copies, like there are with memory cards etc.

Even with memeory cards you should stick to the original manufacturer. The only exception is Sandisk as they also make the Sony branded ones so you can be sue they are top quality.

Ive heard some horror stories with Kingston memory cards.

YES YES YES. Only buy genuine Nokia. I bought one which looked exactly like the original, and was claimed as the genuine article by this ebay seller whose name began with e (ecell?) and who had thousands of feedback. I only came to the conclusion I had been sold a poor imitation after a fiar amount of time had passed. It just doesn't have the same juice as the original
