If you go to Menu > Tools > Internet tel., do you have any services set up which it might be trying to connect to but are not set up properly?

Also check what your default call type is, voice or internet. I tried changing this to Internet on a handset with no Internet call settings and it automatically switched to making a voice call so this may not be the answer:

Menu > Tools > Settings > Phone > Call settings > Default Call Type > Voice

Make sure the phone number for the contact you are trying to call is setup as either a landline or a mobile number and NOT as a "Internet Telephone" number - if the icon is a telephone handset set against the background of a globe then that is a "Internet Telephone" number... "Normal" numbers are either an icon of a mobile phone or an icon of a normal telephone.

also tony, checked what you said about the globe icon next to contact names and all thats there is the standard mobile phone icon so it cant be that. it rings out perfectly when i select the voice call from the options.

Well that's really weird... Your phone seems to be wanting to make an "Internet call" (VOIP) but you have all the VOIP options missing... What network is it - orange by any chance?

Well I personally wouldn't "live with it"... The N95 is a flagship model and you should expect all the functions to work - especially basic's like making calls.

It sounds like a firmware problem so I guess you first call should be to voda CS - just tell them what happens when you try to make a call and your not a happy bunny... If you have only just got the phone then they should agree to swap it.
Failing that your local Nokia Service Center may be able to re-flash your firmware back onto the phone to see if that fix's it.

Last resort would be to flash the phone to generic yourself (search these forums or Google on how to change your product code to generic and update the firmware). Having generic firmware should give you all the features (network provider firmware tends to have extra bit's and some features disabled).
A word of warning though - changing your prod code and updating the firmware will give you the latest features and fix's but it WILL void your network warranty...

Have you by any chance installed then uninstalled Truphone ?

Truphone automatically sets the call type to default to Internet, it will still do this if you are using a Vodafone branded handset even though the VOIP functions are disabled.

If this is the case you can fix this by doing a *#7370# factory reset, make sure you sync your contacts etc first if you don't want yo lose them.

This can also happen if you have debranded your handset to a generic firmware and then restored using a Vodafone backup.
