You need a bluetooth dongle to do that, only a couple of quid from eBay.

N95's wifi is access point based, not ad-hoc, so can't connect direct to a PC. Not that the Nokia PC Suite has the option to install via wifi anyway :)

According to the manual and the setting on the phone it can either be set to infrastructure or ad-hoc ?

Ah, you're right (never read the manual) the option appears to be there, but even with a WLAN enabled PC next to the phone, it doesn't pick it up.

Maybe its for phone to phone comms or something?

I've played about with it and the phone is assigned an IP address by my router and appears on the client list but thats about it. It reads in the manual as though you can connect to a PC. Just cant figure it out. No where for you to assign it to a workgroup either.

Oh forgot to mention, I can connect to the router and browse the internet via my broadband connection using my phone so I guess this is what its for ? Not for connecting to your PC's network ?

Just reading other threads on the subject.

This looks like it might be useful for what you are trying to achieve. It costs, but there is a trial version.

http://www.atopo.net/ has an app that creates a web server of your files so you can just browse via the browser. (I use a Mac so have not tried it so don't know if it's any good)

Bluetooth is easily the best for quickly passing files between the phone and computer. The speed of wi-fi is lost because it of the time taken to connect to the network and mess about with smb shares. Also bluetooth is much kinder on the battery!
