a question for those of you who have downloaded and installed the maps of nokias site and are using the built in gps with the full voice guided mapping. how good is the service? any reception problems with the inbuilt gps? and what is the subscription cost. i know i can download the maps using the map loader does it give me the option to download and install the voice commands aswell. your feedback much appreciated.:)

It's good if you don't have a stand alone unit and you don't want to pay for Route66 or TomTom and an External Bluetooth. Simplest thing is to try it out. The new version (I've posted about it on the forum) Has a 3 day free trial. Try it out and see how you feel. Maploader will let you download the voices so you know.
Personally, I was more than happy with it, but for seperate reasons I needed an external GPS and due to that I started to use TomTom. Without the external, I would have swung between Maps and Route66.

One of the main reasons for getting the N95 for me was for the GPS. I do not have any experience of other GPS systems, which may impact on my opinion.
Since upgrading to v1.2, it has been great, regulary locks on within 15 secs of clicking on the Maps icon (ie including apppication load time)!
Love the fact you can navigate to contacts in your address book, and if you sync through PC suite with Outlook, its easy to keep contacts uptodate.
I bought 3 year licence as it wasn't much more than the 1 year, bargain compared to a serparate unit.:)
For me it does a great job, and I know it will always be with me (not in an emotional sense!!), it has been useful when I have been on foot a few times too.

If you set transport mode to 'on foot', will you still get voice nagivation?

langlea how much was the 3 year subscription, do you still pay a small fee to your network provider when the gps downloads the information to get your initial position?

I think it was about £50-£60, the only additional possible charge is if you are using your A-GPS, but this minimal, between about 10-100kb, depending on the need for assited gps . I have a data plan so never really pay any attention to it.

munkimatt when you say without the external gps you could have used route66 or nokia naps. does route66 not require an external gps? ive heard version 486 will work with the internal gps but that version is no longer available?

486 works, and apparently so does (I think) 545.
