Asda has begun selling contract phones through Dextra and is promoting the service by offering an in-store voucher worth up to £340 to customers who sign up.

The value of the voucher depends on the package. For example, customers who sign up to Orange's Panther 45 tariff for 18 months with a Nokia 6030 will receive a voucher worth £340 to spend in Asda.
The promotion can be compared to generous gifts other retailers have offered customers in the past to lure them into buying phones. Argos has offered customers free DVD players while other mobile retailers have given away PSPs and iPods.

An Asda spokesman said: 'It's great news for customers as they get to choose what they spend their vouchers on, whereas many other offers just give you an Xbox. We offer flexibility.'

A £340 Asda gift card is equivalent to 330 loaves of Hovis Farmhouse sliced bread, 137 chicken tikka ready meals, 948 rolls of toilet paper or 527 tins of Stella Artois.
