Contract phones are set to appear in Asda, the country’s second largest supermarket, in what could be a watershed for mobile retail if it proves successful.
The contract to supply phones has been snapped up by Dextra/4u, which will initially test the format out in a few Asda outlets yet to be identified.
Dextra/4u chief Mark Ormerod (pictured) said it was a major scoop in the fiercely contested space among distributors to supply non-specialists. ‘Working with Asda gives us the opportunity to sell products to their 12 million weekly shoppers,’ he said.
The deal includes exclusive rights to supply contract phones and accessories as well as the prepay handsets which it had been supplying to the American-owned retailer for two years. Supply will kick off with a full range of products, including contract, on Asda’s website. Asda claims that the site is attracting huge amounts of retail traffic as shoppers begin to opt for online instead of high street shopping.
